A lot of the kids are already out of school for the summer, my kids have another 6 days left and then they will be home as well. We can’t really take a big trip this summer, since we are saving our money for another Germany Trip in 2014. But we decided to take little day trips to SeaWorld or Water parks. We have season tickets but the gas driving up to Orlando isn’t cheap. We hardly ever go because it cost too much.

A few months ago I discovered Fuel Rewards at Winn Dixie and slowly started to save a little bit of money, but I decided to do it faithfully all summer long and use the extra fuel savings to take day trips to Orlando or Tampa so the kids will have a fun summer to remember as well.

While I logged into my FRN account the other day to see what kind of Fuel Rewards I may have left, I came across a super cool new promotion. FRN and MasterCard have teamed up and by simply adding your MasterCard (debit card or even pre-paid cards are fine) to your FRN account, you could save on your fuel purchase.

Signing up you MasterCard was super easy; a few simple steps and you are rocking all the way to the gas station. I also added my Winn Dixie Rewards card to my FRN account to maximize my savings and Fuel Rewards offers.

Once I had my MasterCard and my Winn Dixie card set up under my FRN account, I was ready to search the current weekly flier for Winn Dixie sales. With a holiday weekend ahead of us and a cookout down the line as well, I was super excited to find some deals that will make our BBQ a success. A lot of the products even had fuelperks and sales price as well. What a sweet deal! I did nothing different, just shop for the products that we needed and use anyways and that was it!

Once I was all done shopping, I was pleasantly surprised; I had a cart full of groceries, spend under $80 with deals and coupons and ended up with $0.55/ gallon off on gas as well!

Since my gas tank was almost on empty, I knew that I could come close to the 20 gallon limit that the FRN program gives you, but even if I would use all 20 gallons to fill up my car, that would be a saving of an additional $11, just for the fuelperks. I’m loving it! I can save on gas by purchasing the groceries that I need anyways, no coupons needed (but certainly can be used if you have some …lol) and the savings instantly come off at the gas pump. No mail in rebates, no wait time. I paid for my groceries and went straight down the street to the nearest Shell station and my savings already sat on my Winn Dixie card waiting to be redeemed.

This was super cool… I was kind of giddy pumping my gas for $2.99/ gallon, when I see other people pay the $3.54/gallon just on the pump next to me. Super cool feeling and I still can’t believe that I was able to save on my gas by just purchasing our every day products!

The savings will add up quickly and I know we will be able to take many day trips back and forth to Orlando or Tampa and the kids will have a blast this summer. Thanks to MasterCard and the extra fuelperks when you use your MasterCard at Winn Dixie is another bonus. LOVE it! You also get extra fuelperks through your MasterCard for dining out. So simple to do, if you have a MasterCard already in your wallet, grab it and use it as a Credit Card at check out and see the fuel savings roll in.

I’m so glad we all have unlimited text messaging, because the other day I got a text message from my husband while I was at the office, telling me we are out of Toothpaste and he would like me to pick up some, preferably Colgate.

Not a problem, I always pass a Target on my way home from the office anyway, so I planned a stop after work. A few hours later I got another text message, a little annoyed, I was really busy at the office and ignored the message for a bit. Glad I checked it before I left the office, because my Teen had texted me to tell me we are out of Mouthwash and if I could pick up some so he can keep his healthy smile.

Really… my family cannot tell me that we need toothpaste or mouthwash in the morning before they leave the house, they have to send me a Text. This is the new generation… not sure how I like it.

Is your family like that, too? Well, after my super crazy day at the office I decided to take some Mommy time and strolled through my local Target and I grabbed a cup of Hot Cocoa at the Starbucks that is located inside Target. Love that, so convenient. Does your Target have a Starbucks, too?

Ahhh… while I sipped on my Hot Cocoa and looked at all the fun and new things my Target had to offer, I quickly remembered that I kind of was there on a mission, a mission to buy some toothpaste and mouthwash to keep my families teeth at a #TotalSmile. During the Holidays, I introduced you to a wonderful German brand of chocolate called “Merci”. These chocolates are delicious, creamy and come in many different flavors, all in one box. Back at home in Germany, merci is a special treat for special occasions and I remember my Grandma would always bring me a box for my Birthday. Growing up in Germany, tea has always been a big part of our everyday living. We use Herbal Tea hot and cold, mixed with homemade fruit juices or just with some honey and lemon. For me, Herbal Tea brings me back to my childhood; tea is a comfort drink and also has amazing healing powers. It was just natural that when I moved to the US the Tea addiction followed me. However, for years I had my mom send me care packages full of tea. I just couldn’t find the right tea flavors until a few month ago when I walked through my local Walmart, looking for Chamomile Tea to sooth my itchy, watery and crusty eyes.

I found Bigelow Tea and that was the only brand that had Chamomile tea on the shelf. Really… no one in the US uses Chamomile tea? What is wrong with this world I thought, because Chamomile tea has amazing healing powers. I quickly grabbed a few boxes and also saw that they had a bunch of different herbal teas that I had to try. Peppermint is another amazing herbal tea with powerful healing powers that I couldn’t imagine living without anymore; I quickly grabbed a few boxes and ran home as fast as I could to see if the tea would hold up to my high expectations.

After I brewed my first cup of Bigelow peppermint tea, I realized how high in quality Bigelow was, the flavor was amazing, fresh and I loved that each teabag was in its own individual fresh pack; that’s very important with tea, keeping it fresh longer. The tea flavor was wonderful and with a splash of honey and lemon, the perfect refreshing drink on a hot summer day. Besides being refreshing, it also helps me heal my tummy, keeping it in check.

I found a new love for Tea in the US and I can pick up many of my beloved Bigelow Tea flavors at my local Walmart. The price is perfect, too. For just a tat over $2 for a box of quality herbal tea, I can’t complain. No more care packages from my mom… shhhhh don’t tell her though. She will get up sad; she thinks I still have plenty of tea left.

As I strolled my local Walmart the other day, looking for some medications to make this everlasting sinus infection go away, I remembered the healing power of tea and quickly came up with an idea to share these tea powers with you. Very few people in the US talk about herbal teas or even using them as part of their healthy diet, or even to get over a cold. But it’s so simple and tasty and will really help you feel better in no time.

Did you know the power of …….

Chamomile:

• Fight a cold – Chamomile has immune boosting properties and helps in the fight against colds due to its antibacterial properties.
• Wound Healing – If you have an eye infection due to allergies or whatever the reason; pour some hot water over Chamomile tea bags, let sit for a minute, squeeze out all the water and lay on your eyes, rub it in your eyes as well….It really works. Especially if your eyes are all crusty and closed up. Works with children and even my pets. I used it on my dogs many times and they don’t mind the soothing, calmness of the Chamomile and the warm eye patch. Give it a try next time instead of harmful eye drops. If you have an open wound put a warm tea bag on it a few times a day, it will heel that much faster (mommy’s think Chamomile bath after having babies.. works wonders!!)

Peppermint:

• Cold and Flu Remedy- Peppermint is commonly used in cold and flu remedies. Studies have shown that it kills bacteria and viruses. It also has a calming and numbing effect. It dulls the pain of an aching body. The menthol in peppermint effectively thins mucus and breaks up phlegm. It provides relief from coughs and congestion. You will find menthol as a common ingredient in decongestants. It is also a common ingredient in rubs used on the chest to relieve chest aches experienced during colds and the flu.
• Skin Remedy – If you have a rash or hives; brew up a cup of Peppermint tea, take the tea bags and rub them on the affected area and it will sooth your rash or hives in no time and will relax your nerves while drinking it as well.
• Aids Digestion – Peppermint has been found to ease symptoms associated with indigestion in many cases. This herb has a calming effect on the stomach muscles. It also creates better bile flow, which is critical for fat digestion. When you eat peppermint or drink it in tea form, food moves more quickly through your stomach. Peppermint has also been found to relieve the painful gas that is often associated with digestive issues.

These two herbal teas are my favorite and are always in my kitchen at any given time. I even have a box at the office in case I feel a cold coming on or just my tummy giving me issues. I however, never use sugar in my teas. Honey and lemon is a MUST have to make the full tea experience and bring out the full flavor of Bigelow tea.

I’m glad that I decided to give Bigelow Tea’s a try a few months ago and I couldn’t think of drinking any other tea. The flavors are wonderful, the quality is outstanding and I love all that Bigelow does for the American families and the environment.

We are moving right along with our patio makeover and fabric is a BIG part of my makeover. I love to use fabric to add color and give it some splash. However, outdoor fabric like pillows, cushions and even tablecloths are very expensive and most of the time I don’t care for the pattern or color and it drives me crazy that I always have to choose what ugly patterns are in store to work around for patio décor.

Say goodbye to ugly patterns and say HELLO to creating your very own. I went to my favorite online fabric store Fabric.com and ordered a yard of a few different colors, patterns and outdoor fabrics that I liked to create pillow cases and tablecloths for my backyard makeover.

I love that the outdoor fabric from fabric.com starts at about $5 a yard and comes in soo many colors and patterns. I know there is something that will fit your style and place. All the outdoor fabric are water proof and perfect to keep outside. So no worries if it rains, your fabric will be fine. Just like the ones you buy at the store already pre-made.

Now, I’m not a person that can sew; honestly, me and sewing machines have been in a war since I was in 2nd grade and we had sewing lessons. The first time I ever touch a machine the needle broke right away and flew in my face.. no fun; every time after that it happened as soon as I touch a machine; needless to say NO SEWING machine for me..EVER!!!

BUT… there are super cool no sew products that you heat with an iron; I’m not the best of fan of irons, either, BUT I can do this. I grabbed a roll of heat and bond and my fabric and off to the porch I went. I used my patio table to iron all the fabric and turn them into Pillow cases and tablecloths, all in no time at all. It will look like a million bucks when you are done.. TRUST me!!!

I used one yard of fabric to make a table cloth and a 16×24 pillow case…. in about 10 minutes. Yup, that’s all it took.. 10 minutes!!

I bought simple pillow inserts at Ikea in different sizes; some were $2 some $3 and some only $1 and then used my outdoor fabric to create a no sew pillow case for them all. Simple as that.

I got 3 pillow cases out of a yard (my pillows were 16×24), so with the 3 pillows and a yard of fabric that cost me about $5 a pillow if not less. That’s not bad at all. Considering that most outdoor pillows start at $20 or even higher.

How to make it:

• I used my fabric 50×18( give or take, I did all without a measurement, but my 16×24 pillow fit perfectly)
• Use the bright side (or right side up) of your fabric up, add Hem tape to the two longer sides; keep one side open and the third side is your fold anyways, so no need to add Hem tape. Iron it for a few seconds
• Remove the paper from the Hem tape; fold your fabric over; colored side to colored side; iron again and let cool for about 2-3 minutes or longer. Now you have a pillow case with measurements of approx. 16x24ish.
• Once cooled; turn your fabric right side out and stuff your pillow into the one opening that’s left. No worries, if you let the Hem tape cool enough it will not come apart.
• The last seem you can either fold over and use Hem tape and iron down or just attach hem tape to the inside and iron down like I did in the picture below. Super simple and whatever works best for you. It will hold strong and trust me, no one will look for the last seem of the pillow if you did it perfect. As long as it looks clean and keeps the pillow tucked inside, you are good to go….

Check out how the simple #DIY pillows and tablecloths dressed up the outdoor space with my own colors and style; you will not find this in any store but you will be able to create whatever you like with the outdoor fabric and no sew heat bond… So get crafty, pull out the iron and get started.

With school almost out for the summer, we have 17 days left, but who is counting, right? I decided to jot down some ideas on how you can keep your kids entertained this summer and all on a budget. Follow along my top 5 favorite things to do with the kids this summer and share your ideas on how to keep the kids happy all summer.

1. Make a Library date each week and take the kids to spend some time checking out books, reading, playing and just having a blast. Besides being busy all morning long, you will be able to bring home an entire bag of books that will keep you reading to your little ones all week long.

2. Sprucing up your backyard with maybe a kiddy pool or sand box that will keep the kids happy all summer long and won’t cost you an arm and a leg like going to Disney or the Waterparks. Be sure to check out the online deals and savings on toys and kids stuff at BJ’s to create your backyard play land and the kids will be entertained while you relax in the yard. I call it “staycation”, my favorite thing to do all summer!

3. Crafts, crafts, crafts are a BIG part of our summer, whether it be crafts that we can do outside like sand art or indoor crafts for rainy days; stock up on craft supplies anytime you see a deal and whip it out on days when the kids keep saying “I’m bored Mom”. You know what I’m talking about, YUP.. those days come often in my home, even with a room full of toys. So art and crafts is a wonderful thing. 4. Check out your local attractions; a lot of them will have a FREE kids day during the summer like the Zoo, Aquarium, Museum. Pack a lunch and have a fun day with your little ones.

5. Take the kids to the movies. Check your local Movie Theaters for FREE movie showing all summer long. They are all rated G or PG and will be a lot of fun for the entire family. Since it’s free, you could maybe splurge on some popcorn. Enjoy movies like Ice Age or the Tooth Fairy. My local Theater has an entire schedule and will show free movies 3 days a week. Can’t beat that and the kids LOVE going to the movie theater.

We are still working on our deck makeover and this weekend we added some much needed shade. I have this odd place where an umbrella doesn’t fit, because I have an overhang from the roof, but we desperately need shade. Most umbrellas run you about $100-$150 and I knew I had to come up with a solution. I’ve seen some Fabric sails online and thought they are pretty cool, until I checked how much they cost. A simple sail was starting $100 and up, for the ones I found online I would have had to buy 3 to make the shade that I needed.

I have been checking online stores, local stores and nothing would fit my need or budget and all the sudden I thought about why not add outdoor fabric and I went to my favorite online store Fabric.com to see what they had to offer. To my surprise they had a ton, really a ton of fabric to choose from, all different colors and most are starting at like $5 a yard… NOT bad at all for outdoor fabric. My local Fabric store had a 50% off deal on their outdoor fabric, but none where under $11 a yard; So I rather waited the 3 or 4 days for shipping and had a better deal, since shipping was free.

I ordered a few different patterns, colors and yards. Even found a coupon to save 10% (use code corner13), better then nothing, right. I’ve used Fabric.com for many of my fabrics over the last few month and couldn’t be happier with the service, product and quality.

I finally had my fabric for my canopy/sail or whatever you call it. I ordered 4 yards and spend $30 for the fabric, I also ordered a set of curtain grommets. These are super cool, no tools required and worked like a charm.

I added the grommets to each corner of my fabric and that’s it. I could have sewn the edges to make them all look neat and pretty, but I know that my fabric will probably only last this season; it’s HOT in Florida and pretty much anything will fade or just rod away from the sun. So I didn’t go into too much effort to make it look neat and pretty. Plus for that price if I ever change my mind and want different colors, I can order another set of fabric. The grommets are removable, so I can use them over and over again.

For the post I used a flower pot, some people use a smaller size and fill it with concrete and then a little bit of dirt for flowers on top; I used a bag of gravel/rocks on the bottom and a bag of rocks on top of the soil, a 4×4, potting soil and plants. I only needed two buckets, since my fabric can attach to my overhang, but if you need you can create 4 buckets to attach your fabric to. (The 2×4 that’s across one of the post isn’t part of the project, hubby put it there for me to put into the shed and I totally forgot when I took the pictures, please ignore..lol)

Simple as that. I can always re-sue the buckets with flowers, always re-use my 4×4 posts and if needed can replace the fabric for a fraction of what it will cost me to get a new umbrella each year. Lots of shade for us already.

The post are also nice to hang planters, lanterns or any kind of outdoor lights and accessories you like to dress it up…. perfect for any size patio or porch, because you can adjust the planters and fabric to your space. Super cool, super cheap and will last you all season and then some.

I spend about $70 on the two big planters, 4×4’s and fabric to create the shade and charm of my patio; super simple and I know you can do it, too.

By adding the fabric, it cooled down our patio by a good 10-15 degrees if not more. Without the fabric, we couldn’t even sit on the porch without getting our feet burned from walking to the benches, the cushions got so hot that we couldn’t even sit down and now with the sail, we can walk out and sit down without an issue.. LOVE it!!!!!

My Sail is removable, so if a windstorm, rain or whatnot comes out way, I just take it off the hocks and fold up the fabric…

We are planning on finishing the dining area this week and then we will be able to eat dinner outside before the Florida Sun gets too hot and the humidity sets in with millions of flies and mosquitos… Can’t wait.

Tuesday:             Southwest Stuffed Bell Peppers

Wednesday:          Cuban Subs and Salad

Thursday:             Baked Salmon with Dill Potato Salad and Savory Irish Scones

Friday:                Breakfast for dinner ~ Pancakes and Fruit or savory

Saturday:            Oven roasted Sausage, Onion, Pepper & Potato Bake

Sunday:              BBQ time at our house ~Family over for dinner

We always eat together as a family and usually have a home cooked meal; but sometimes I just feel like picking up something for dinner and let someone else do the cooking. Of course I still look out for healthy dinner options and Subway has always been one of our favorites. The kids each can create their very own sub and we don’t have to worry about the food allergies my teen has, because he can create a sub the way he wants it with the things he can eat. We can have 5 different dinners every time we run into Subway and everyone is happy.

On our last visit to Subway, I saw a new sandwich called “Smokehouse BBQ Chicken”.

When I told hubby that I wanted to try the new Smokehouse BBQ Chicken, which only had 380 calories for a 6 inch, he thought I was crazy. I’m not the BBQ kind of gal, but I loved the low calories and the full flavor. I decided to give it a try. Hubby kept saying “You are not gonna like it, better change your mind now”. Nope, I stood my ground and I’m glad I did. I really LOVED the sandwich.

It was light, fresh and delicious. Perfect smokehouse BBQ flavor, not overpowering with sauce or Smokey flavor; just the perfect combination. I only added Lettuce and Tomatoes to min, but also added white American cheese. It was YUMMMY.

I love that Subway has a calculator on their website, you can create your very own sub and see your calorie count for that particular sub.. LOVE it! Have you tried it yet?

I actually ordered a footlong, the Smokehouse BBQ Chicken Sub is currently for $6; but I can honestly say I have lunch for tomorrow. One 6 inch filled me up and kept me happy all day. YUMM… I can’t wait for lunchtime to grab my other 6 inch full of BBQ chicken flavor.
