My Tween is truly a bookworm and since school has been out for a few weeks now here in Central Florida, reading has been IN; at least with my Tween. He went through a bunch of books already from small chapter books like the Diary of a Wimpy kid to now the bigger books like the Harry Potter Series; none the less my Tween goes through books like there is no tomorrow.
It really isn’t unusually for my Tween to read 2-3 books a day. I love when he reads, that keeps him busy and away from electronics and TV. But it also drives me crazy, I can’t afford spending all my hard earned money on books to keep him busy and the library isn’t always an option either.
His all time favorite book so far was the Lightning Thief, he read that book in less than 3 hours and couldn’t get enough of it. I’m amazed by how much my Tween reads. When he started out as a little tike, he wasn’t a good reader at all. He actually hated reading. He would memorize anything I read to him and that’s how he would read the book back to me or his teachers.
He pretended that he was reading, but in all reality he had it all memorized. It was amazing to see him as a 5 year old memorize everything we read; he was struggling for a long time, but he never gave up. He didn’t start reading on his own till about 3rd grade. But as time moved on his love to reading grew bigger and bigger and now he even asks for Books for Birthday and Christmas and he is at a reading level for 8th grade and he isn’t even in 6th yet
Can you say proud mama…..
Reading is such an important part in my Tween’s live now and we think it should be in every child’s life. Reading is fun according to my Tween and can turn into something way more powerful than a TV or video game ever would. You still have imagination in a good book and the excitement and the smell of the pages, nothing can replace that feeling. ( Not even a kindle…smile).
