Book Review Wednesday: Thursday Night Pizza with Father Dominic and Italian Style Pizza Recipe

March 9, 2011 By Melanie Roberts 6 Comments

We love Pizza.. who doesn’t love Pizza….?? I could eat Pizza for Breakfast, Lunch and dinner… I don’t know why, but maybe because Germany is so close to Italy and we always had Pizza. It was just natural when I was asked to take a closer look at a new Pizza book called “Thursday Night Pizza” by Father Dominic; Father Dominic put all his favorite Pizza recipes into this little book. I couldn’t figure out which one to make first.

We decided to try out the Italian- Style Pizza Crust to see if it was different then what the American’s make and if it was close to what I was used to from home.

Here is what you need for the Italian-Style Pizza Crust:

  • 1 pkg active dry yeast
  • 1 ¾ cup room temperature water
  • 1 ½ tsp. salt
  • 3 ¾ to 4 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • Olive Oil

How to make it:

  1. In a medium size bowl, stir to dissolve yeast in warm water; let stand for about 5 minutes, stir in Salt until dissolved.
  2. About 1 cup at a time, add 3 ½ cups of all-purpose flour, mixing thoroughly each time until flour is completely incorporated.
  3. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured board and knead for 3 minutes; dust your palms lightly with the remaining all-purpose flour as needed to keep the dough manageable.
  4. Let the dough rest on the countertop covered with a clean, dry towel for 5 minutes, then knead for another 3 minutes, again using small amounts of flour to keep things from getting too sticky.
  5. Lightly Oil the surface of the dough and place in a small, clean bowl ( we noticed a glass bowl worked better than the plastic bowl) and cover with plastic wrap.
  6. Let rise in a cool place for 2 hours before use, or in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight.

Once your dough had enough rest time, it was ready to form the pizza… we made double the dough and had 4 pizzas….!!! They were huge….

What did we think? ……

They were AMAZING….!!!!! We all loved them… the bottom was perfect, the edge a little think, I don’t mind that but that was kind of our fault, we had way to much dough on a little 12′ pie plate… but it tasted just like it looked “YUMMY’… everyone from the Tween, the Teen and Hubby loved it and made plans to make this Pizza once a week. Hubby did a great job and this book was a wonderful guide. I can’t wait to try all of them.

Here is what else you can expect in the Thursday Night Pizza by Father Dominic:

  • Different Crusts and make your own sauces
  • Appetizers like Sundried Tomato Appetizer Pizza
  • 17 different Pizza creations like Italian Beef Pizza
  • Dessert Pizzas

This is one Book that I will use over and over… I’m very excited to introduce all of my readers to this wonderful book, it’s a pocket size and has 115 pages and retails for $16.00, you can purchase your copy through Amazon.com or any other local Book store… it is well worth it.. If you give the Pizza recipe a try, we would love to hear what you have to say. Also, this Pizza dough was fairly cheap, everything you have in the house and toppings whatever your family likes.. I added up I think on all 4 pizzas we spend maybe $6 for all 4 of them … if you would have gone out to a Pizza Place it would have easily been $10 a pizza.. so grab a movie and have a Family Pizza night at home for much less!!!! And Yes… it tasted just like at home……

The back Cover:
After twenty years of testing recipes on his fellow monks, Father Dominic of public television s Breaking Bread offers a surprising variety of pizza recipes sure to please every palate. With his customary detailed and easy-to-follow directions, Father Dom shows you how to make the perfect crust (the real key to first-rate pizza), flavorful homemade sauces, and savory toppings. You’ll discover a delicious reduced-fat sausage that is both easy and economical, the way to avoid soggy crusts, and a magic trick to have warm, crusty bread waiting for your breakfast the morning after pizza night. Recipes include six different doughs, seven sauces, and dozens of pizzas like Pesto and Prosciutto Pizza, Muffaletta Pizza, The Denver Diner Special, Mediterranean Vegetable Pizza, Pizza Diavolo, and Fig and Papaya Dessert Pizza.

The Crazy Mom’s house gives this book a 2 Thumbs up… you should check it out and give it a try.

I was given the book listed above by the PR company/ publisher for my honest review, no other compensation was nor will be given and all opinions are 100% my/our own.
