Book Review Wednesday: Brownie Groundhog and the February Fox

March 16, 2011 By Melanie Roberts 1 Comment

Brownie Groundhog was excited for spring as any of us.. this winter especially here in Florida sure has been cold.. and looking at all the pictures from up north, I can only feel for you guys. So when groundhog day came a few weeks ago, and the Groundhog didn’t see his shadow, we all were in for a longer winter.. what a bummer… we love spring and to think that we have to wait 6 more weeks ( at least that’s what the legend tells us…) for spring can almost be an eternity. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to wait… someone else who doesn’t like to wait is Brownie, the groundhog in the story. She wakes up on groundhog day to discover that she has to wait for spring, she was not very happy about that thought and unlike other groundhogs she decided to venture out. She had enough of winter and was determined to have a fun time; while venturing out she encountered a hungry fox, who would have loved to have Brownie, the groundhog, as a snack, breakfast, lunch or dinner item. However Brownie gave the Fox different tasks to work up an appetite; one task was to clean the snow off the ice.. once the fox had done that he was all excited and ready to eat Brownie, the groundhog, for lunch, she announced to the Fox that he had worked so hard and lunch already had past, he now needs to wait till dinner, but in the meantime they could ice skate on the clean lake… they had a blast; later on Brownie, the groundhog, even shared her cinnamon snack with the Fox… the two ended up becoming friends in the story and spend the waiting time together day by day till spring would arrive. This cute story is illustrated by Carmen Segavia and Written by Susan Blackbay and it doesn’t really tell the story about Groundhog day rather tells the story of two unlikely animals becoming friends and waiting for spring.

The story along with the pictures is very cute done and my toddler had a ball looking at the picture and coming up with her own story. This is a very cute children’s book that any little one would love. The recommendation for this book was Grade 1-3, I’m sure for reading level purpose, but I would say your Toddler can also enjoy this book. Wonderful story and will for once show a fox that isn’t all mean, yes he has some intentions in eating the groundhog, but with very cute tactic and maneuvers from the groundhog they end up being friends… very well done.

You can check out this book through Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com or your local book store. This books retails for $14.95

I interviewed Susan, the author, for a local paper and found her to be completely gracious and charming…great to know her book is a keeper!
