My Teen has been asking me to make his all time favorite German dinner, Rouladen. This is a down home cooked meal and it reminds me so much of Sunday dinner at my Mom’s house. So I decided to surprise my teen with Rouladen; I’ve never made them in the Crockpot before. Usually you make them on the stove and then put them in the oven, but I was a little busy for all that and then the house would get sper hot, being in Florida we already are running our AC in overtime and it’s only April L ; so the Crockpot it is ….
They turned out wonderful, I made 8 Rouladen and we ate every single one of them. They were just perfect in any way.
I took step by step pictures, since it is a bit different and I’m not sure how many people actually had Rouladen before. But they are simple and sooo yummy and once they are done, you can say you had an authentic German meal J
This is what you will need:

- 1 Jar Sauerkraut ( any flavor will do)
- 1-2 cups of Beef broth
- 1-2 packs Thin sliced Steaks ( can’t remember the name, but make sure they are fairly thin and somewhat large enough to roll up)
- 1 onion, deiced
- 1 pack of brown gravy mix
- Mustard ( I like Dijon or brown Mustard, gives it a better flavor)
- Toothpicks or string to tie the Rouladen together.
This is how to make the Rouladen:

- Take the Steak and spread mustard on the steak
- In the center add Sauerkraut & Onions, not too much it will fall out when you roll it up
- Roll up the Steak and keep together with toothpicks or string
- Add Beef Stock & brown gravy mix to Crockpot, mix well
- Add finished roulade to Crockpot
- You can add the remaining onions ( if any) to the Crockpot
- Close lid and cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 6 hours
- Serve with Potatoes, pasta & salad

We had Creamy Cucumber salad with dinner, that’s just something I’m used to from home, it’s simple, just slice cucumbers, add some sour cream and a little bit of vinegar, black pepper and dill ( if you have). Mix and server with dinner.
Would love to hear how you liked this Authentic German dish, it sure was super easy and smelled soo good. My son already requested it for next week..lol.. J
Guten AppetitJ

My nona, grandma and mother all make rouladen, one of my favorite meals!! But my nona taught us differently. Take the steak, spread with butter and mustard, but instead of saur kraut and onions, she used a dill pickle spear, and saur kraut was served on the side ( sometimes switched out for rotkohl)

Hi Mhinz, your recipe is very popular in the northern part of Germany, very tasty, too. I’m from the southern part and we always use sauerkraut, isn’t it fun to see all the different recipe ideas? Thanks for checking mine out and hope you give it a try.

PS Got here by way of the Gooseberry Patch slow cooker collection!

We would have these often but my Mom used tenderized round steak.
Instead of the sauerkraut, she would use strips of bacon & a dill pickle in the center.
Then brown & simmer for hours.
The Crockpot sure would make it a lot easier.

I was so glad to find your recipe using saurkraut instead of the usual pickle, since I was just about ready to go next door and borrow one! It’s in the slow cooker now smelling wonderful. I did an extra step and browned the rouladen in some bacon fat, after rolling them in some flour, so they would have more of that brown look. But I can tell the taste would be just scrumptious anyway, when you are trying to save time with a busy schedule. Ein prost to a healthy dose of German heritage!

Aww Susanne; thanks for leaving me such a nice comment… Hope it turns out well for you.. we love the combination of the sauerkraut, mustard and everything else.. YUP.. that’s how my mom at home in Germany still makes them and that’s how I dish them up all the time, too… Ein Prost und Danke… Guten Appetit
