Summer Homework is a chore… get rid of it!!!

Hi; I’m the tween and I decided to pop up here and there and interact with my mom’s readers;  she always talks highly about you guys…. and after all if you have Tween questions, I’m the one to answer them Smile.

I’m here to talk to you about summer school work, well… maybe it will be a rant post Winking smile. Is it just my school or is everyone having summer school work nowadays? I attend a Technology Charter School here in town and I will be in the 6thgrade come August, but the last 3 years we had homework that was due the first day of school. This can’t be right, this really should be against the law…. right?? Hello, where is this country going to, we are cutting summer breaks down already, and now homework??

My opinion for this topics is why should we have to do homework,   it’s our  summer, the time we are out of school and we suppose to chill and have fun, so why do we have to do it?????

Yes, I know that we loose a month, two or maybe even three, of school when we are out for the summer, but this is our break from school. We shouldn’t have to do work!

I know I’m just a Tween, so let me enjoy my Tween years, mom tells me I will grow out of it soon enough. But, let’s face it if you have the homework that I have right now, write a book report on a book from a list my teacher has provided,  do math sheets, also provided by my teacher, summer journal to keep track of every move I make this summer, and take a quiz about the titanic, really, the Titanic, who in the world came up with that, couldn’t it have been something fun like, how to catch a fish, or how to be a lazy Tween? I also have to  create Flash Cards about the Titanic….should I go on, or are you tiered of listening what my homework is this summer….??

Boy, my summer doesn’t sound like all that fun, hopefully when I’m a Teen I have it all doneSmile

My opinion for this is just get rid of Summer Home Work,  what’s yours??

I disagree. My daughter has 6 kids, all spend 1 hr at Mom’s (she is a certified teacher) school a day. They spend another 1/2 hr at night writing in their journals, writing to friends or relatives, sending thank you or I appreciate you notes, writing to do lists, etc/ The oldest 3 tell stories (made up stories) to the youngest at night and the younger spend a couple of minutes with round robin stories. Just this week the 14 mo old has joined the story telling, we can’t understand a word but she tells it.

I am a teacher and I struggle to respond to this post. In an ideal world parents would encourage their kids to play, read, explore, have fun and stay active during the summer. Parents teach their kids things everyday and in different ways. If all kids were lucky enough to have parents who are willing to take them out of the house, allow them the opportunity to explore and learn informally I totally agree that “homework” during summer school would not be necessary. However, unfortunately, a lot of parents don’t provide these types of opportunities for their kids. I think that is why teachers feel compelled to hand out homework during summer. We have seen what a summer sitting at home watching tv, playing video games, and having NO (and I mean No) positive conversations can do for a kid. It’s not fair to them… but I guess in a way it’s not fair to you either!

Hi Ashley.. love your answer.. it’s true we are always on the go and sometimes hard to squeeze in that extra work, but I see the point on the other hand as well… will relay the message to my Tween… maybe he’ll feel better now 🙂
