We are all about saving money in the Crazy Mom household and I’ve always heard that the DVD player or the TV will actually use a lot of electricity even when turned off and on Standby. I’ve always been curious to see if it actually would make a difference and if we would notice a drastic change on our Electric Bill if we unplug the devices vs. leaving them plugged in.
The other day I got a little product called Kill A Watt EZ and this little thing is pretty cool, you plug it in and plug the device into the Kill A Watt EZ and see how much it will cost you by running said device for a day, a month or even a year; the large LCD display is clear and easy to read and super cool.
I tested it with my Son’s MP3 charger, one of the many things plugged in, in the Teens room. I keep complaining about how much extra electricity I’m being charged he should unplug the stuff. His answer always is “Mom, it’s not that much.”. Does that remind you of your parents yelling at you to turn the light off because it cost too much?? ( or was that just me…lol). Anyways his MP3 radio/charge showed that it runs for $.04 per day and it cost us $17.13 a year just to run this MP3 player/charger.
I know that doesn’t sound like a lot, less than $20 a year… BUT that’s just one thing in the Teens, the Tweens and even the Toddlers room, not even mentioning our office, game room and all the other rooms; from Phone chargers to Wii chargers and even the refrigerators, WOW… I’m hooked and want to save as much money as we can.
This Kill A Watt EZ can also be used for detecting voltage drops and brownout conditions that have the potential to damage delicate equipment. A built-in memory and battery back-up retains your information in the event that power is interrupted.
This wonderful little unit retails for about $35.00 and is a great help in determining which electronic pulls the most on your Electric bill each month, but that’s not the solution to the problem. This will only help you on a small scale to determine where your money is going. Have you ever looked at your heat pump? Surely we can’t hook that up to the Kill A Watt EZ and if we would, well… I don’t even want to think about it.
One great alternative is by using geothermal heat. A Geothermal system utilizes the Earth as a free-heat source captured by a series of underground polyethylene pipes called a ground loop. As a water/anti-freeze solution circulates through the pipes, heat is transferred to and from the home, pretty interesting, isn’t it? I can not wait to research a little more about geothermal heat pumps. Sure sounds like an interesting concept and best part you can kiss your gas/oil/propane company goodbye.
If you like to see how much electricity is being used in your home, maybe by the tween or teen to deduct it from their allowance, if it’s anything like in my house, you know what I’m talking about…lol.. be sure to enter our Giveaway below. What device do you think Kills your Electric Bill? Probably my extra old fridge in the garage. I only plug it in when we have a big get together and need more fridge space, so that helps, I guess!
