This year sure has had its challenges already and between busy days at school, long hours at the office and sick kids, we are still trying to eat as healthy as we can. Breakfast is always a challenge when we have to run out of the house to make sure no one misses their bus, or I hid the road on time to make it to the office. For weeks the kids wouldn’t eat breakfast, they grabbed a granola bar or something on the go. I never liked it, but we just had no time. This had to change!! How can the kids be happy and healthy and only have a granola bar in their tummy till lunch break? We had to #rethinkwhatyoudrink.
Breakfast cereal was out of the question, too sugary and not enough healthy stuff; especially the ones the kids love. When I ran out of milk the other day, I decided to run into Walmart to see if I can find some healthy yet simple breakfast ideas that we can prepare quickly and get the kids off to a GREAT start.
As I walked the cooler section at Walmart, about ready to grab a gallon of Fat Free Milk, I glanced over and there was an entire section of “alternative” milk. I decided to check it out. After all, what can be worse than Fat Free milk? I caught the sign of the Silk Soy Milk “New Great Taste”. I had tried Soy Milk before and it was ok, nothing to brag about and my kids always turned their nose up when they saw Soy Milk in the fridge. But it is good for you.
Wonder if the new great taste would make them change their mind? I grabbed a few cartons and walked down the aisle. To my surprise Silk Soy Milk now has Silk Soy Latte. Perfect for my morning commute to the office. I had to give it a try and grabbed a carton as well.
As I wandered through Walmart I came up with a way to “disguise” the Silk Soy Milk… in a Breakfast Smoothie. Perfect way to hide the Soy Milk and to get my kids a quick breakfast that is simple, nutritious and yummy; all in no time before we have to run out the door. I grabbed a few other ingredients like Strawberries and Spinach. I got super excited and couldn’t wait to make the Smoothie.
This is what you need to make the Breakfast Smoothie:
- 2 cups frozen strawberries
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 2 tablespoons Wheat Germs
- 3 cups fresh organic baby spinach
- 1 cup Silk Soy milk (flavor of your choice)
This is how to make this wonderful Breakfast Smoothie:
-
Add spinach first (I did last and my smoothie didn’t turn out too well at first.. trust me, add the spinach first)
-
add your cup of Silk Soy Milk
-
Add frozen fruit (we used Strawberries and bananas, but you can add your fruit of choice)
-
Sprinkle What Germ on top
-
Blend, blend, blend……..and after about 5 minutes your smoothie will be ready to put in a travel cup and out the door you go.
After I asked the kids and even hubby how they liked the Breakfast Smoothie, I got two thumbs up from everyone; that is 6 (!!) thumbs up; no one complaint about the spinach, the silk soy milk or even the green color. Everyone loved it!
All you could taste was the bananas and the Strawberries, but the smoothie sure kept me full for the entire morning. WOW, this will be our new quick Breakfast on the go from now on!! trust me, you have to use the Silk Soy Milk or it will not turn out as creamy and flavorful; I tried… Yup.. Just take my word for it
Did you know?
Silk Soy Milk, the Vanilla Flavor has only 100 Calories per cup (other flavors like Almond Milk has even less, only 30 calories!!)? How about 6g of protein? Did you know that Silk Soy milk is dairy free, gluten free, lactose free, egg free, casein free NO MSG or cholesterol! And for those who wonder about weight watcher points (since that’s a big thing in out house right now), it’s only 3 points per serving. Start your day off right with a delicious tasting Silk Soy Milk and you will never look back at Fat Free Milk.
What will you have for Breakfast this morning? #rethinkwhatyoudrink, I know what I’ll be drinking.
For more information about Silk Soy Milk and why it’s such a great alternative to regular cow milk, be sure to visit them on the Web, you can also follow on Facebook and Twitter; did you know you can use Silk Soy Milk to cook? Lots of great recipes to be found HERE or on Pinterest. Of course I created a Google Plus Story so you can check out all the cool things that I found at my last Walmart shopping trip and where we found the products.
Also, some Walmart stores have sampling of the Silk Soy Milk with the great new taste, they usually also offer coupons during that time, be sure to grab a sample and see for yourself; we loved it. It was enjoyed by the entire family and will replace our Fat Free milk from now on, that’s for sure.

I am amazed they didn’t complain about the spinach or the green color. Will have to try this one. Thanks, Melanie!

I’m, too Ms. Pam…. BUT honestly you couldn’t taste either and the flavor was AMAZING. The kids are asking for more….gotta love it 🙂

Hadn’t thought to add spinach, but my boys would certainly love the green color, I’ll just tell them it’s a Hulk smoothie 🙂 Smoothies are so awesome for a quick breakfast, for sure!

Barb, that’s a great idea about the Hulk Smoothie… I was kind of thinking for the princess if she questioned it to tell her it’s a Dr. Seuss Drink …lol.. but she loved it anyways…

I love spinach smoothies, but this recipe is a fun twist from my usual recipe! Yum!

This sounds like a great healthy breakfast for those on the go. I really like the taste of Almond Silk and wouldn’t think twice about using it for smoothies. I love Barb’s idea of calling this a Hulk smoothie, my sons would drink it for sure with a name like that.

Our family loves using silks almond milk for our smoothies and cereal but we dont use soy because of all the controversy about the added hormones soy has.
