Learning a Second Language…

January 2, 2011 By Melanie Roberts Leave a Comment

Most of you know,  I’m German, born and raised in Germany and moved to the US a few years ago. However it is very difficult to teach a language with very little help.

Here in Florida the second language is Spanish, so you get Spanish TV, Spanish speaking toy etc you get the idea, but for my language of choice it is very difficult. Now my boys understand German and my oldest is trying his hardest to learn to speak it; I speak fluent but it is difficult for me to speak it to the kids when I get the blank stare back.

I do however try my hardest to teach the baby, and that so far is working wonders everyone in the “Crazy Mom’s” House is learning German from brothers to Dad to even grandparents, they all learn through the baby. Amazing how that works.

So I wanted to mention to you that amazon is in Europe and will ship to you from each country any type of books, DVD and Cd’ s and to my surprise the fee was really not that bad.

So every few month I go to Amazon Germany and order books to read to the kids, music Cd’s, movie Dvd’s so the kids can get enhanced learning through Media. I know first hand that Learning through media is one of the best things.

When I moved here I knew the basics how to get my way around, but the way I learned was through singing along to the radio in the car, cleaning the house and watching movies etc., it does work. I never had a teacher other than in school for the basic English language many many years ago ( back then we actually learned British English rather than American English) and  now I’m fluent with very little accent ( so I’m told..lol)

If you are interested in either teaching your little ones your native language or are brave enough to have them learn a totally different language check out all the different Amazon’s.

The  awesome part is,  when I order books, Dvd’s and Cd’s,  Amazon will let  you  pay in US$ with your debit or credit card and  you don’t have any extra fees, they charge like $1 or $2 more than the current rate on the whole transaction, so it really is a lot cheaper than what your credit card will charge for international, and shipping at least from Germany to the US is not bad  at all, through Amazon.de

I always make sure I have a list of items that I want, it’s not worth it if you only buy one book, but with a big list 1 or 2 times a year shipping is $15 flat fee, as much or as little as I want and usually it is at my door within 6 days…

That is something to think about if you want to teach a different language.

It has been very difficult for me to find any German materials that I care for, lot of the “German language CD’s” are not even pronouncing the language correctly, so I had a hard time with that.

If you are interested here is a list of some of the other countries.. check it out. If you are not familiar with the language, have Google translate the page into English for you…:-) . Happy Shopping 🙂

Amazon France

Amazon Germany

Amazon Japan

Amazon UK

Amazon Italy

Amazon China

Now I do want to warn you if you decide to order Dvd’s the European market has a different DVD code then the US Market, most PC’s have a Code free Dvd player and you can use the Movies to play on the PC, you can also purchase code free DVD players and they run anywhere from $50 and up and will play every DVD imaginable in the world and hook up to your regular TV, just like the US DVD player, that’s what we are using and loving it… the DS games work in the US DS without a problem. Leapfrog and and some V tech games work in the US system as well.

Isn’t that cool how you can teach your child a language like that… who would have known…..
