A few weeks ago, I mentioned that both my Toddler and I have curly hair; we found some great cheap products that tremendously changed how the hair looked and kept the frizz to a minimum.
First up, I did buy the book Curly Girl: The Handbook for the iPad and I loved it. So informational about all different curly hair from wavy to crinklets’ to short and long even how much of a bounce your hair has, all have different needs and wants. I had no idea that my hair wants certain things….??
The book even came with videos on the iPad they worked themselves right into the book,. the actual book comes with a DVD. Anyways, super book if you have curly hair, you should check it out.
But I’m also cheap, I learned to dry my hair with a Microfiber Cloths , if you have curly hair and it’s frizzy defiantly check out the Microfiber Cloths from the kitchen sink. It works wonders…!! Don’t use a regular towel and just squeeze the water out and don’t rub the hair …..
I also learned not to wash my hair for weeks.. I know, you probly say WHAT??? But to be honest, I’ve gone 2-3 days without washing and noticed a tremendous difference in the hair, the curls formed easier and better even without any extra gel or mouse. I also learned to use shampoos that are Sulfur FREE. I had no idea of such a thing, but I looked and found a few that were super expensive, I did not wanted to buy the expensive brand and be stuck with it.
I consulted with a Curl Guru here in Florida and her recommendation was to use Burt’s Bees Shampoo and Conditioner, I had no clue that they were also Sulfur Free. Best part I can get a bottle for like $5 and that’s without a coupon, on sale maybe even cheaper. I like that a lot better then the Salon products that start at $15 a bottle…
I also use a deep conditioner besides the Burt’s Bee Shampoo once a month from GroHealthy Milk Protein & Olive Oil Really Deep Conditioning Treatment, that actually is only $.99 at Wal-Mart. So Fairly cheap but works wonders.
I also use a few home remedies that my Curls Guru in town recommended and I already used on my own for many many years. They are cheap and will make your hair the best it can be.
Baking Soda Clarification *I use this A LOT and love it..*
With some silicone-based products, clarification must be done to remove the product that builds up over time on the hair shaft. Rather than resort to sulfate-based shampoos to remove this build-up, which can damage and dry the hair, a baking soda cleanse is preferable:
Combine:
1 tablespoon baking soda
3 tablespoons curly-friendly conditioner
Apply mixture to the scalp and massage firmly, then continue to massage the mixture down the hair shaft to the ends. Work into hair well. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and follow immediately with an apple cider vinegar rinse.
Note: you must follow any baking soda cleanse with an apple cider vinegar rinse. Baking soda is alkaline—meaning it will raise your cuticle and open up your hair shaft. The apple cider vinegar is acidic and will close your cuticle back down. If you don’t follow the cleanse with an ACV rinse, you’ll be leaving your hair shaft open and setting yourself up for more frizz than you’d probably like.
Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse
There is some debate on whether or not an apple cider vinegar (ACV) rinse alone can clarify the hair; however, it is helpful to bring the hair back into balance after an alkaline solution has come into contact with the hair and will shut the cuticle back down. Repeated use of ACV rinses can be drying, so limit use to once or twice per month at most:
Combine:
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 cup warm water
Pour the mixture over the hair after cleansing (do not rinse out), then condition as usual. Any lingering smell will dissipate as the hair dries.
All this has helped me get my curly hair the way it should be by mother nature, curly beautiful and not frizzy… so try it; I will post a few more over the next few weeks so you, too can have beautiful curly hair….
My Toddler enjoyed the “Spa” day with mom as you can tell by the picture… and we both now have beautiful curly hair…

Thank you! my 2.5 y.o. son has gorgeous curls. Problem is they frizz and tangle more often than not. We’ll try out your recipes. I have absolutely no experience with curls – my hair is straight and flat.

I love this… I have curly hair. I’ve read that book, as well, and while it did give me helpful hints, I just can’t go without washing my hair. I just don’t feel clean!

Curly Crazy hair! Yeah we have it too! We go mostly natural with a little mouse to keep those curls curly (not frizzy) and in place (ha!) Truly love your little girls red curls. She is the cutest!
