Hair cut or not??

May 18, 2011 By Melanie Roberts 19 Comments

Do you have a teen that needs a haircut? How do you handle the situation? My teen is at that stage where he will NOT allow us to get a haircut and every time we do get him to get a haircut we spend like $20 Bucks and they take ½ an inch if not even less off; his hair is very think so they do think it out, but for the most part I feel like it is a waste of money.

So my question for you today, should I get my teen a haircut or do you think I should just let it go eventually he will “grow” out of this phase? This is one issue I don’t know how to tackle, I like his hair short and somewhat I have his school on my side, they do send him home every few weeks with a note that he needs a hair cut or he will be suspended, then he has no choice but to get it cut into “compliance”.

I guess my post is mainly about looking for your opinion, I need some help and who better to ask then my wonderful readers.. Do you think my Teen needs a hair cut or am I just overreacting like most mom’s probly would???

What’s your take on this???

I don’t have teens yet but this seems to be the hair style among the guys now. I would say keep it cut to “compliance” and let him be an individual. I know we mommy’s hate to see them grow up but this his “adult” stance. =)

Thanks Meagan; I know I have a hard time with him “growing” up… we don’t really fight over it, but I like it short sooo much better šŸ™‚ But again he is growing up…. my baby… Thanks for reminding me

Get the Hair cut.. our guy used to fight us on this.. his hair is super thick and sticks up when it tends to get long.. with summer time coming he may be glad he got it cut. I don’t know of any advice to give you to make him get it cut.. but he should listen to you and not get the suspension.

Hi! I do have a teen who always needs a haircut because his hair is very thick and grows so fast. The problem with him is he too lazy to go to the barbers. ^-^

I think this is just a harmless fad on your teen’s part. You know, trying to blend in and everything. Maybe he feels good having a longer hair. Anyway, he still complies with school regulations. And one advice I’ve read somewhere is if it doesn’t go against moral and family values, then you can allow it. Hope this helps!

I would say choose your battles – since the school has requirements, he can only let it grow so long. Maybe he’ll feel differently when the weather gets HOT!! At least he doesn’t want a piercing or tattoo

Michele… now that’s a good way of thinking; I’ve never dreamed of the other options…lo… yup I guess I’ll be happy and let it go… he has it like this for almost 3 years now.. so summers don’t bother him šŸ™

I think it looks fine, being the Mom of a 14 yr old with the EXACT same issues !!!! At least it is neat, my sons is curly and looks like a mess, but mine keeps his just above his earlobes and his back is shorter than yours. The bangs are about the same.
Mine gets a hair cut when the girls at school tell him it’s time ! ha !

Haha.. the funny thing is, the girls in school get mad if he gets a hair cut… his is actually longer then in the pic, that pic was 2 month ago… and he does have curls and very thik hair, too…. Glad I’m not the only one with that issue šŸ™‚

I’d leave it alone. This is one of those things where I let my son have complete control. Really – who’s going to care in ten years what his hair looked like? I think that giving a kid some autonomy over this aspect of his life can do nothing but give him confidence. Also, I think it’s important that we show our kids that looks aren’t everything – it’s what’s inside that counts. By freaking out over a haircut (or lack thereof), you would be showing how important looks are to you.

In fact, take lots of pictures and make fun of his little experiments when he gets older. I remember when I was that age I used to wear men’s fedoras around – looked totally stupid! My dad still shows me that photo (and shows it to my kids!)

I don’t have a teen yet, but my almost 8 year old son tries to act like one sometimes. I think self image is something we should allow teens to be in control of. Usually at that age is when their trying to find their identity and who they are as individuals; it’s his way of expressing who he is now. They’ll eventually grow out of it, so I would say let him be his own person and have long hair.

I think that he’ll grow out of it. I had thick hair in high school, and after much battle was allowed to let it grow. After six months, I was ready to just buzz it off.

My second oldest went through this phase and had the long hair in the front (in his face) look. Round and round we went and he never did want to get it cut. Luckily for me, he was on the wrestling team and the coach said cut it or don’t wrestle.

But…he grew it back. It lasted for about a year, and I just quite grouching about it. He’s a senior this year, and has a beautiful short haircut that he’s had for quite awhile. Looking back at his 8th grade picture (the year he had long hair) he acknowledges the long hair was a bit much.

So…my take on it, your son will grow out of the phase. And move on to another, hahaha. :o)

Just let it go for now. My older brother had hair like this for a long time. He’s in his early 20’s now and he looks back on himself as a teenager and goes “Why did I let myself walk around looking that ridiculous/shaggy?” He’ll see things your way eventually… just not yet.

He looks good with the hair in the photo. SHorter hair does have its advantages as in EASY CARE. Hop out of bed and head out. No blow drying and styling.
