We’ve always been a big Scrabble Family, we love every single version of this game, my favorite is the traditional scrabble, because we can play it in German as well as English. It makes for a lot of fun when we mingle the two languages together. The giggles and laughs are just soo much fun, good times J Now after many years of playing the original scrabble, Hasbro just released a brand new Scrabble game called Scrabble Flash. When I first saw the commercial, I thought this game was too cool, when it arrived at home I was a bit disappointed at first. Here was this HUGE, giant, humongous box, I loved the box by the way, colorful and very nice job by the marketing department. However, once the kids got the game out of the box and I walked away for a minute leaving instructions for the boys to set the game up, I expected the game to be ready on the table… when I came back my son was sitting on one side of the table with a small (4×2) box in his hand… I must have asked the boys 3 times “Set the game up”… and they both laughed at me… then it dawned on me, the little black box was the travel case or storage box for the game. Boy was it small.. the box it came in must have been 10 times the size… okay, well, that was the first shock..let’s check out the game itself; 5 little electronic squares fit nicely inside the 4×2 box, I was amazed, take them out and your game is ready to go… now I’m kind of excited, this should make for a fun family game night…
The first player took all 5 game cubes and ready set go….. 75 seconds of play time and create as many words with the letters that Scrabble Flash threw at you as you can…. You can use 3 letter words as well as4 or 5 letter words and as many as you can create in 75 seconds will be counted. After your time is up, the electronic letter will show you how many words you were able to come up with and how many possible words there were with the letters you were given. This was a lot of fun, my Tween couldn’t get enough of it.
However, I wouldn’t really recommend this game as a Family Game night game, to me it is more a one player game. Yes you can play more than one person, back to back, but while one player is playing, the other ones are just sitting there waiting, the game tiles are so small, that only the actual player can see them, so you can’t even see what words are being created and you just sit there staring into the air waiting for your turn, I didn’t really like that.
I do like the concept of the game, and it was a fun game, my Tween was able to boost his spelling, which desperately needed it, this is a wonderful game and learning tool, I just wouldn’t really recommend it as a “family” or group game. This game would be great for travel to put it in your travel bag, it’s small enough to take anywhere you go and pass some down time, whether you are in the park, waiting for the bus or on a long car trip, this would be great to take along….
Here are a few things I liked about the game:
- Very portable and can go anywhere
- Fun to play for one player
- Educational
- It’s a cool game that will be fun for any age group
Some things I don’t like:
- That no one else can see the word creations other than the current player
- I wish it would be able to keep score
- The 5 3.0V CR2032 lithium batteries ( I’m thankful that they are included in your game though)

Some info from the Manufacture about this game:
Scrabble Flash offers a compact, modern version of the classic game that people of all vocabulary levels can enjoy. Great for players eight years and older, this game features five SmartLink tiles that keep track of your words and points electronically. Play one of the two solo games, or swap tiles to win against a friend. Ideal for road trips or family vacations, Scrabble Flash delivers word-building excitement in a convenient, portable size.
Play it Anytime, Anywhere with SmartLink Tiles
With only five tiles and a lightweight storage box, Scrabble Flash is both portable and well within the word power of younger players. The game starts with a chime as each of the interactive SmartLink tiles displays a letter. Tiles can “read” each other’s letters when they touch as you shuffle them around to make a word. When you’ve made a word, the tiles light up and beep, and you can continue to the next word. Once your time is up, the tiles digitally display your score. When one game just isn’t enough, press the reset button and the tiles will flash a new combination of letters.
Three Game Possibilities for Solo or Group Play
Scrabble Flash offers three game possibilities for either individual or group play. The Flash option asks players to make as many words as they can from the same five letters in 75 seconds–each five-letter word adds five seconds to the clock.
In Five Letter Flash, a player finds one five-letter word and then receives five new letters, trying to spell as many words as possible in the allotted 75 seconds.
In the third option, Pass Flash, players pass the tiles around. When one player has formed a five-letter word within the time limit, they pass the tiles to the next player, who gets five new letters. If a player doesn’t spell a word quickly enough, he or she is eliminated from the round, and everyone else continues until all but one player has been eliminated.
To make things easier for younger players, each game can be played with only four tiles. The game’s flexible format makes solo play fun too

That being said, would we recommend this game? Most defiantly, it was a bunch of fun and it is defiantly something my Tween and soon my toddler will be able to enjoy, (even Mom and Dad had a blast) and boost their vocabulary, I just wish it was a little bit more family oriented maybe 2 sets of the game cubes instead of one. It is a great idea and a wonderful new game approach to this all time favorite game, but I think there should be a few more adjustments to accommodate more than one player…
Scrabble just announced their very own Facebook Page. Make sure to go check them out and like them… they would love to have new “Friends”
As a little side note there is a SCHOOL SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP
