I love pasta and my son asked the other day if he could make some Ziti for dinner. Of course I won’t say no if someone volunteers to cook dinner. My Teen loves to cook and this was such a great recipe for him to make I just had to share it.
I’m not a fan of box meals or cans but I’m a fan of simple, quick and fresh along with healthy. How about dishing up this delicious semi-homemade Baked Ziti and it didn’t break the bank. All the ingredients are usually stable in your pantry or can be picked up at the local grocery store with coupons and a sale.
I was able to grab all the items to make 2 big pan full of Baked Ziti and it cost me roughly $4 a pan; we have one entire pan for freezer cooking left and 1/2 of the other pan are leftovers and the other half we were able to feed 6 of us with seconds… Boy, we are stuffed. I told you, simple and cheap, yet homemade and delicious is the way to go.
This is what you need for Baked Ziti
- 1 24oz jar Tomato Sauce sauce
- 3-1/2 cups ziti or penne pasta, cooked
- 1-1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- ½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup whole milk ricotta cheese
- fresh basil
- ½ teaspoon sea salt & 2 tablespoons for the pasta water
- 1 loaf of French bread
- 1 stick of garlic Butter
This is how to make the Baked Ziti in no time
-
Preheat the oven to 400°F.
-
Bring water and 2 tablespoons of salt to boil in a large pot. Add the pasta and cook it to al dente. Drain.
-
Mix the tomato sauce, ricotta, ¾ cup mozzarella, ¼ cup Parmesan, ½ teaspoon salt, and the basil together in a large bowl. Add the pasta, stirring gently to coat completely.
-
Coat the bottom of a 9×13″ baking dish with butter (I used some of the garlic butter). Spread the pasta mixture evenly in the dish. Sprinkle the top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
-
Bake for 20 minutes, or until the baked ziti is bubbly and golden brown on top
While I had my Baked Ziti in the oven I cut the French Bread into slices, spread some garlic butter on top and had homemade garlic toast. We love it this way, simple and our favorite.
Now Enjoy you homemade Baked Ziti that is budget friendly, healthy and delicious all in under 30 minutes. You can give it a twist and add Italian Sausage, Chicken or even Beef.

I love baked ziti, and one main reason I don’t make it often is because it takes me so long. I love that you have this up!
