A few weeks ago we had a review on Growums, those garden kits are wonderful to start a garden; we had our starter kit and then the plants started to grow very quickly; almost every day you could watch them how they grew bigger and bigger.
My Tween is a big Gardner and he soooo wants to be a farmer one day; he loves to spend time outside and garden and take care of things. Well, we had the starter plants and knew we had to do something. For weeks the Tween had been bugging us for setting some space aside in the yard for him to garden.
I had no problem with that, but it would have been very expensive for us to build a fence to keep the dogs out and then get the soil up to standard for growing and all that kind of stuff; just for a few tomato’s?
But my teen didn’t give up, he came up with ideas like putting the veggie plants in pots, but being in Florida, they require a lot of water in pots, so I didn’t like that idea, he even wanted to build a fence on his own, he was determined to have a garden.
One afternoon a few weeks ago, he walked through the yard with gardening tools, rake, shovel and trash can in hand and when I had asked him where he was going, his answer was “growing my garden”. I followed him and he walked to the front yard….???
Check out what my Teen had done in about 2-3 weeks worth of time with this flowerbed that was wasted space in our front yard; he had been watering this every morning and every night, I never once had to ask him for it; he pulled weeds and all kind of stuff to keep his garden growing.
We now have Tomato’s, carrots, lettuce, herbs, cucumbers and a few different pepper and pablano pepper plants growing in our front yard and all thanks to my tween who was determined he will have a garden.
How cool is this…?? My Tween is super excited for the day when he can prepare a fresh salad for us; he keeps talking about if for weeks now. I love the smell of fresh tomato plants and the herbs are doing well, too.
The story behind this wasn’t just how determined my tween was in having a garden, BUT even if you don’t have much space you can always find some room to grow a few plants and produce your own homegrown produce.
This is the Tween at his favorite place in the world, his Papi’s garden.. he so wishes he could spend every second there… or have a big garden like that…… Dreams maybe come true…….
Next on his agenda, Berry bushes and more veggies… I think we may have to come up with a plan since the little flower garden in the front yard may not hold all of my tweens dreams….
What’s growing in your yard…..??

It’s great to see a young person so motivated to produce his own food. Most kids these days don’t even know where their ‘food’ comes from or what common veggies even look like. Good for him!

My sweet potatoes are ready to did too, waiting till the weather is cooler to did, the tomatoes did really well, everything did! The deer ate most of the corn, but hey they have to eat to..(I new they would when I planted it) 🙂 might as well feed them to, for they are a thing of Beauty!

How fun! We have a garden this year and it’s been interesting seeing what is growing and what isn’t. We didn’t quite realize how bad our soil was until after we planted, but it’s all learning for next year!
