Thompson Wood Cleaner and Stain Deck Makeover {Review & Giveaway}

August 15, 2011 By Melanie Roberts 44 Comments

Labor Day is fast approaching and that means summer is coming to an end. Here in Florida it is actually going to be “Our” time to go outside and have fun in the beautiful Florida Sunshine. During the summer month it’s just too hot to enjoy your backyard or deck. We love our outdoor space and spend a lot of time on our big wood deck during the fall month.

Our deck is about 3 years old and with the sun beating on it every single day it sure took its toll over the last few years. So this summer, my hubby decided to get it all ready and pretty for the fall, so we can enjoy a few nice evenings on the deck with the kids. Bless his heart, he spend about 4-5 days on the deck painting between rain and major heat wave, but he didn’t complain once. What a great Hubby he is.

Check out what our deck looked like before we started.
IMG_0309IMG_0311

As you can see, it was in desperate need of a makeover, the stain was flaking off and the wood was dirty and just not looking good at all. It wasn’t inviting to go out and spend time on our big deck.

First up, Hubby had to clean off all the old stain and dirt and he used the Thompson’s WaterSeal Heavy Duty Deck Cleaner. I was a little skeptical at first; the website claims this cleaner would restore the wood to its natural beauty. How can that be after it has already “weathered” and turned gray by Mother Nature was my first thought. BUT, I wanted proof, so we went out to Lowes and picked up the required items to get the deck cleaned.

IMG_0326

You need:

  • A Sprayer to put the Deck Cleaner in
  • A brush that has very stiff bristles, I would recommend a bigger one for the big areas and a smaller one for rails and smaller areas on your deck.

We’ve also found a great video, that explains what products we needed and how to get your deck cleaned, since we had never cleaned or re-painted our deck it sure was a big help.

Now that we’ve educated ourselves on what we need and how to get it done, hubby went outside and spend a Saturday cleaning the deck. Check out the pictures how the deck looked after it was cleaned.

IMG_0322IMG_0324IMG_0327

That was very impressive, I was truly surprised of how quickly the deck was restored, all the prior stain was removed and our deck almost looked like the day we installed it. Amazing!!!  Thompson’s WaterSeal Heavy Duty Deck Cleaner, surly exceeded my expectations in this Deck makeover project. Unbelievable!!

You do know the importance of cleaning your deck every 2-3 years to keep the beauty of the deck going and have a beautiful deck that your entire family can enjoy for years to come. Thompson has a wonderful line of wood protection from cleaners to sealers and stains that will get the job done. Have you spend some time on their website to explore the many different products and tips, ideas as well as Video How to’s? I had no idea that Thompson’s has that much information and help available. This turned out to be such a great makeover of our deck and it was simple as 1-2-3.

1 . Clean the Deck
2. Let it dry
3. Seal or stain/paint the deck

After we cleaned/ stripped our deck of the old paint we had a few days with rain storms and very bad weather, for Florida so unusual, BUT someone knew we were painting the deck and decided to not corporate and send us the rain. But hubby went outside every sunny chance he got and stained the deck in a beautiful new color, we’ve decided on Thompson’s® WaterSeal® Deck & House Semi-Transparent Latex Waterproofing Stain. It was kind of hard to choose, since Thompson’s has 117 different colors to choose from. I had no idea. We decided on a cedar color and it actually turned out great.

120_4157120_4158

I’m super excited; can you see how beautiful our deck looks now? It truly is a part of the house again and I cannot wait to find new beautiful outdoor furniture to finish off the deck. With summer coming to an end, you should be able to find some great buys and you can enjoy them for a few more weeks/month sitting on your beautiful updated deck.

Here is some information about Thompson’s, we’ve always used Thompson for any of our wood projects, so I cannot compare them to any other product, but what I can say, we LOVE the outcome of every project that we’ve used Thompson’s products on.

I need this deck makeover kit because our small deck is surrounded by trees and is constantly being covered in leaves and sap. Fall is cooler and a perfect time to restore our little “sanctuary”.

We have a huge deck that I stained only last year.

This year, it is really weathered and needs to be redone.

My husband is away working and will not be home until late November.

I guess that leaves redoing the deck to me. These products certainly would make the job much easier.

Thanks for the great giveaway. ~Pauline (dod@rogers.com)

My deck has never been sealed and is in horrible condition! Since I am recently married, my husband has been working hard to do all the things that were neglected for years. This would allow us to make our deck usable and family friendly!

We really need to clean and restain out deck badly. We haven’t been able to do it for the last several years due to financial difficulties. Since our house is situated on a hill near a creek, our back deck is essentially our back yard.

Our deck hasn’t been resealed in years and years. I’ve been trying to get my husband to do it, but he doesn’t get around to things like that without something to kick him into starting it. Winning this prize would certainly do that!

I need this deck makeover kit because our deck was surrounded by trees and constantly being covered in leaves and sap, it looks awful!!! This last winter we had a ice storm that downed so many trees, there was so much clean up. Most everything is back to normal except the deck and it still looks awful, I need to and would love to win this so we can get it finished before winter. With most the tress now gone and this makeover kit my deck should be good to go for a while! Beautiful!
