I was given this question the other day “What Life lessons do kids learn from team sport?”. I spent a few days thinking about what I would answer and then decided, why not share it with you guys as well.
We are a big soccer family, the kids have been in soccer since they could walk and now the Teen is even part of the JV Soccer team for the local High School, he even was voted Captain last year.
Besides soccer there are many other team sports that a child can participate in like Baseball, Softball and Football, just to name a few. The game is different but the principal and outcome is always the same. One Team wins and another team loses.
Let’s check out a few of the things that I think kids will learn and walk away with if they participate in a Team Sport, any Team Sport, as long as you get them out and be active.
-
Attitude Adjustment– It’s ALL for One and One for ALL!! There is no “I” or “ME”, this is a Team, everyone has to participate, work together through fun times as well as tough times, be there for your Team.
-
The three “P”’s are a very important life lessons. What better way than to learn it through Team Sports. I’m talking about PRACTICE, PATIENCE, and PERSISTENCE; the three “Ps” of team sports translate into important life lessons and will help your child throughout his/her entire life.
-
Fair Play –Learning how to play fair is yet another very important lesson a child can glean from participating in youth sports.
-
Kids who play sports quickly learn that sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. They learn to be a good sport in both situations. It also helps them learn to deal with disappointment and go on.
-
Team Sports help develop teamwork and leadership skills.
-
Team sports help with socializing, talking amongst team members will also help with other relationships that you have with family, friends and anyone they meet in the future.
-
By being part of a team, a child will also develop a sense of pride, accomplishment and trust.
-
Team sport can make anyone the person they want to be, you just put your mind to it and make an effort.
These are just a few examples of what any child will gain from being part of a team sport. With School funding for PE and any kind of Sports Activity being cut almost on a daily basis, it’s very important to encourage our children to take part in some kind of team sport or activity. Subway has developed a wonderful project called the Subway Baseball Designs Auction, it is currently running on Ebay and any and all proceeds will benefit the Little League Baseball Urban Initiative program.
This is a wonderful way to show support for our children and to get them involved into any kind of team sport will enrich their life skills forever.
