Create a Message Center in your house and decorate with Modge Podge

January 29, 2012 By Melanie Roberts 5 Comments

I caught the bug, the Pinterest bug that is; so many cool ideas they have and that got me thinking. We are in the middle of planning a kitchen remodel; and I got a head start on creating a Family Message Center. I always wanted to have a place where I can store lunch boxes, keys, mail and all the junk that is always on the counters or in a drawer… oh yeah, that’s called “junk”…lol….

Anyways, I created the message Center last week with 4 of the Ikea expedit shelving units. They are fairly cheap and you can buy the size that would fit your space.

Now that my “Message Center” is up I wanted to decorate the Magnet boards and a few other things and customize them to my likes and colors. I bought the Magnet board at Ikea for $12.99, and it’s a fairly big size; and I picked up some heavy duty magnets at Home depot (8 for $2.99 not a bad deal).

See the magnet board and the blue Magazine folders and the blue tubs on the bottom? Yup, I Modge Podged them with Scrapbook paper and fabric, was so easy to do and I did it all in about an hour or so and spend very little to customize my space.

I picked up 1/2 yard of a fabric that I liked to cover the magnet board (1/2 yard for each board and one tub) and the plastic tubs on the bottom; The fabric was only $3 for 1/2 yard, but it depends on what fabric your want; I used Scrapbook paper to cover the front of the Magazine rack; 1 sheet was good for 2 magazine holders; also fairly cheap.

Here is HOW to transform just about “ANYTHING” into a customized item…..

This is what you need:

  1. Pick the item that you want to “Modge Podge”
  2. Pick the fabric or Scrapbook paper, even Decorative Napkins will work….
  3. Sponge brush
  4. Bowl
  5. Bottle of Plaid Mod Podge ( I used the Matt, you can use the Gloss if you like)

This is how to “Modge Podge”

  1. Brush your item with a layer of Modge Podge ( where you plan on putting the fabric or paper and you don’t have to let it dry)
  2. add your fabric or paper on top of the glue layer
  3. brush a second layer of Glue over your fabric or Scrapbook paper;
  4. Let it dry….

The “Glue” will be white when you apply it, but it will dry clear and will leave a great finish and even “strengthen” your scrapbook paper or fabric….

That’s it.. simple as that!!!

Check out what my Message Center looks like now…. So excited about some new colors in my kitchen

I also attached glass tiles (we are tiling our backsplash in tiles and I snug a few) to the magnets with Gorilla Glue and now the kids can attach their art work to the Magnet boards.

For more ideas be sure to check out my Pinterest board, I saved a bunch of cool things and you never know, maybe you catch the craft bug, too… I’m off to convince my hubby that I should either Modge Podge the kids somehow or buy 5 yards of my favorite fabric and Modge Podge the wall instead of painting…. hmmm I’m in Love with this stuff….!!!!

P.s. the cool part about decorating with Modge Podge is that you can “peel” it back off without a problem and add a different fabric or paper…. So you can change it whenever you feel you need a change but can’t afford the entire Home Deco to be replaced… LOVE IT!!

Wow! I love it! I love all the patterns you chose. This would come in so handy, but I don’t have any place where one would fit.

I love that idea!! I also love that you chose to use different patterns and not all the same ones. The problem I would have is that I would buy the unit and all the stuff and then it would take a year to get it put together 🙂 oh… It looks great!
