We love Frikadellen in our home, you can call them German Meatballs. Unlike here in the US you don’t eat the meatballs smothered in Tomato sauce, at home they are a mix of Hamburger Patties and Meatballs; We have them as a meat item paired with Potato Salad or on a Keiser roll with a little Mustard and Ketchup ( especially when they are cold, the sandwich is yummy).
They are so simple to make and my kids love them and can’t get enough of them. I thought this would be a great recipe to share.
This is what you need:
- 1/2 pound ground veal
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 3 slices of dried french bread
- 1 large egg (cage-free)
- Hot Mustard (small amount to taste)
- 1/2 Finely chopped onion
- Kosher Salt to taste
- Ground Pepper to taste
- 1 tbsp Worcester Sauce
- Handful of fresh parsley chopped
- 2tbsp of Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Plain bread crumbs (if needed to hold dough together)
This is how to make them:
- Soak the bread in warm water for 5 minutes
- Chop the onion and parsley while bread is soaking
- Drain water from bread and squeeze as much water out as possible.
- Place all ingredients in a large bowl and mix with both hands until the mixture has a sticky-dough consistency. This step is crucial to hold them together.
- Heat Olive Oil in pan to a medium heat.
- Form small hamburger patties with the dough and carefully place in the pan. (if too sticky add some breadcrumbs)
- Let each side cook approx 8 min or until sides are brown and inside has reached 160 F.(try to minimize flipping)
- Immediately serve with your favorite sides and enjoy!
P.s. I know I said Veal & Pork for the meat, but you can also use ground beef, it all depends what’s on sale and what we have on hand.

This sounds good, too! I usually buy the pork loins when they are $1.99 a pound. The “pretty” end, I cut into chops or a roast, and then I grind up the not-so-good-looking part for recipes like this. Judging by the smell and the color, mine is LOT more healthy (and cheaper!) than what they sell in the stores!

ohhh yup.. yours would be yummy with the pork loin… yummy.. I love to cook with Pork Loin, too.. and $1.99 is my target price, too :-0

sounds delicious! Is the ‘hot mustard’ wet or is it the dry mustard powder?
CrazyMom says
really however you like.. I usually just use the “wt” one from the fridge; or any kind of mustard

I plan to make these for an Ocktoberfest teacher appreciation lunch, so I’ll need to re-heat them. I am thinking of putting them in a crockpot to re-heat them? Do you think that would be ok? And do I need to put any liquid in crockpot ?
CrazyMom says
They will be actually better reheated…:0)… if you have a microwave or a heating plate it may work better than the Crockpot never reheadted them in a crockpot.. but may be worth a try, my crockpot has a Warm setting, that may work and you don’t need to add any liquid…. just keep an eye on them, … at home we actually eat them cold, too on a bun :0)… Yummm.. I can already smell them…… would love to hear the outcome…and if the crocpot worked :0)
