Book Review Wednesday: Money Mama & The Three Little Pigs

April 13, 2011 By Melanie Roberts 4 Comments

Easter is just around the corner and I love to include a book for each of the kids in their basket. For my Tween I came across a wonderful book called “Money Mama & The Three Little Pigs“, created by Lori Mackey, design & Colorization by Nicole Lomonaco and Line Art Illustration by Icy Young. For me it is very important that my kids know how to handle money; we use coupons and try to save as much as we can for the things we want and not need. It is never too early to teach your little ones the same principal that you have with money. This book “Money Mama & The Three Little Pigs” is a wonderful teaching tool for any one age 6+ I would say; my toddler sat there listening, but I doubt she had a clue what the meaning behind the book was, yet she still enjoyed it. My Tween on the other hand was excited. When I first gave him the book he said ” I’ve read it mom“… I looked at him and he said” I found it the other day and read it, I love it” in his own words I had him tell me why he likes it. This is what my Tween had to say:

I like this book because it tells me about how to start saving my money; the best part is that it doesn’t only show you how to save money, but it breaks down your savings towards a lot of different aspects, like take your entire allowance or earnings and split them in different saving sections like :” Give 10% to a charity of my choice, Invest 10% to start my money to grow and turn into more money for me; Save 10% of my money for when I’m older and may have bigger needs and that will still give me 70% of my money to spend anyway I like; yet I was able to already help someone in need out and start saving for my future. What a wonderful way to look at it.

I was impressed with the answer my Tween had given me, so I decided to take a closer look at this book for myself. I loved the beautiful yet simple and pleasant to your eye illustrations in this book; the pages aren’t cluttered with a ton of pictures. The story line is kept short and sweet on each page with large letters that even a beginner can easily read and follow. I loved the book, the introduction of the Money Mama and her Three Little Pigs, they are called “The Giving Pig”, the “Investing Piggy” and “Savings Piggy“. All the Piggy’s in their own kid friendly way tell their story and how the magic behind each piggy works.

The end of the book reads ” You need the magic of Money Mama and ALL three of her pigs to help the world, have a life full of fun, and create a bright and shiny future. She knows you can do that and now, you know it too!”. I loved that. What a wonderful way of teaching your little one how to handle money. Our kids need to learn this, otherwise they will be in big debt like so many American’s today.

If we don’t teach our little ones, no one else will. Our kids follow our examples, so if Mom & dad make good choices the kids will take notice and learn from that. I highly recommend this book in any Home Library, I bet you will pull it out over and over again. This book also includes a Bonus CD with the story so your little one can Read along. To cool.

For more information or to check out all the other cool products that Lori Mackey has available to teach your little ones how to handle money, check out her Website; this book can also be purchased through Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble.com or any of your favorite book store and retails for $19.95

I was provided with a copy of the book for our honest review, no other compensation was nor will be provided and all opinions are 100% our own.
