Cabbage, Salsa & Meatball Casserole #Recipe

Cabbage, Salsa & Meatball Casserole #Recipe

Are you looking for a simple dinner that will be budget friendly and super delicious and I bet everyone will love it? Come check out the Cabbage, Salsa & Meatball Casserole. This is a dish I tried when we went home to Germany and everyone loved it, so the other day when I ran out of dinner ideas I decided to give it a try.

Almost all ingredients are easy to get or even already in your home. Took me about 20 minutes to prepare it and then another 20 minutes to bake it. It was YUMMY….Sooo different, but the textures and flavors worked together beautifully, so will make this again soon.

This is what you need for the
Cabbage, Salsa & Meatball Casserole

Cabbage, Salsa & Meatball Casserole #Recipe

  • 1 head of cabbage, your favorite kind ~ I found Savory cabbage at my store and love the mild flavor. But any cabbage will work just fine.
  • 1 ready made pizza Dough ~ in the refrigerated section of the store
  • 1 jar of your favorite Salsa
  • 1 package of frozen meatballs, I make my own, but store bought is just fine
  • 1 package of your favorite shredded cheese, we used smoked Gouda this time
  • 100ml milk
  • 150 ml vegetable or chicken stock
  • Optional bacon ~ My son is allergic to pork so we left it out
  • Butter
  • 1 tsp. flour
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Cabbage, Salsa & Meatball Casserole #Recipe

This is how to make it:

  1. Shred the cabbage, I just cut it into strips; took no time at all, take a spoon full of butter and sauté the shredded cabbage till it’s cooked, glossy; you can also add the bacon sauté the cabbage with the bacon fat.
  2. Once the cabbage is cooked, add the Salsa to the cabbage, heat quickly and set aside.
  3. Take the Pizza dough and stretch till it fits the bottom of your casserole form; spray the casserole form with Pam or any other spray and put the dough into the casserole dish
  4. Make a Roux with 2 Tablespoon butter, let it melt and once it gets hit and bubbly add 2 tablespoons of flour, stir quickly; keep stirring till the flour is incorporated into the butter, may get clumpy and doughy; add the milk & chicken stock, keep stirring; it will thicken up, just keep stirring for a minute or two.
  5. Sprinkle some cheese on the Pizza Dough, layer the Cabbage Mixture over the Pizza Dough, put the Meatballs on top of the cabbage mixture, add the Milk & chicken Stock Roux and top with cheese.
  6. Place in pre-heated oven 350F for 20-25 minutes

Enjoy… it was really a delicious dinner and all the flavors melted together soo beautifully. I know it would have been even better adding the bacon, but with my son being allergic to pork, bacon was out of the question. We substitute with smoked gouda a lot, that has that bacon taste and makes dinner amazing, you really will not believe that there is no bacon in the dish, thanks to the smoked gouda. I always grab mine at Aldi, they have them fairly cheap under $3 for a wheel. You will love it!

Would love to hear your thoughts on this dinner combination, what is your favorite cabbage dish?

We’ve been eating a lot more cabbage (Napa Cabbage is the BEST) as a salad. Your recipe looks REALLY good (albeit fattening). Will have to give it a shot!

This sounds absolutely amazing. I have to admit I have only had cabbage along side a boiled dinner, so I would love to try something new like this.

What a unique casserole. To be honest, I never make cabbage because I am not much of a cook. I do enjoy fried cabbage with bacon though.

This casserole looks really good. I’ve always been a big fan of cabbage since my grandmother prepared it all the time when we were growing up.

I think this casserole looks great. I would love to make this. I would have to take out the salsa because I break out in hives when I eat tomatoes.

This looks and sounds delicious and cabbage is so good for you! My favorite cabbage dish is a close tie, I’d say between Apple Cole Slaw and Fried Cabbage. (Search on my blog … would not let me include urls). 🙂

I like Cabbage but usually just make it plain with chicken. I never thought about combining it with Salsa before. This looks like a delicious recipe so I’ll have to try it.

I’m not usually a cabbage eater, well, except in egg rolls… but this dish looks AWESOME!! I think I should try to get the one on the table without letting my husband see the cabbage.. He may not even try it if he knew the ingredients. It wouldn’t be the first time he ate something not knowing what it was though! hah
