My kids love Soda, just as much as any other kid does; I hate paying the price of soda and lugging around all those heavy bottles and not even to mention recycling all those bottles. With two teens we can go through a lot of soda in a week, that’s no fun at all.
I knew there had to be a different system that would work both for my wallet and for our recycle box. In Germany we had this really cool Soda Maker that I enjoyed so much, when I hit the internet to see if something similar was available in the US I quickly found Sodastream.
I checked out Sodastream and learned that it will make Soda in many, many flavors over 60 flavors to be exact and it would cost me a fraction of the cost of a 2 littler of Soda and to my surprise no lugging bottles from the store to the home, no storing bottles and don’t ever have to find a sale for a soda that the kids enjoy.
All that had my attention pretty quick and I wanted to get my hands on one of those new Genesis machines to see if it really is that simple as the website states. We all know that infomercials aren’t always what they crack up to be and I’ve learned my lesson to be cautious on a few things that seem too good to be true. I’m sure we all had that experience.
To my surprise, everything that is needed to get started with your Soda making skills is included in the package for the Starter Set. It came with syrup samples, Co2 bottle that is needed to make the bubbles as well as 2 1Liter reusable bottles that you can use over and over again. That was it, pretty simple setup. The machine was put together in one snap once we installed the Co2 bottle and we were ready to make our very own soda.
There had to be a catch… WELL… the only catch was to pick one of the many flavors that Sodastream has to offer, we just couldn’t make up our mind and closed our eyes to pick one for now. Orange it was!
Fill one of the reusable 1 liter bottles with cold water to the water mark; put the bottle into the Sodastream machine and push the bubble maker button a few times. 3 times for average fizz is recommended, but if you like it more bubbly, go ahead and push one more time.
That’s it, now you have sparkling water and if that’s the kind you like, you are done. Your sparkling water is ready to be used; if you are like my kids that need flavor in everything; go ahead and pick your syrup and add it to your bottle.
We held our bottle over the sink to make sure nothing would fizz up; holding the bottle at an angle will help keep the fizz at bay and will allow to flavor the water. Once all the syrup is in the bottle, close the lid and gently twist around or roll around on the counter like we did. Takes only a few seconds and Voila… your Soda is ready to be enjoyed!
My kids LOVE this Sodasream machine and are totally impressed by how simple it was to use and how wonderful the Soda taste is. The nice thing we can adjust the syrup flavor to our likes, if it’s too sweet pour a bit less in next time, if you prefer a stronger taste, add more. We also love to make our very own Mezzo Mix, which is a German Cola drink and isn’t available in the US. Thanks to Sodastream we can mix part Orange and part Cola Syrup and create our very own Mezzo Mix right in our kitchen and enjoy it over and over again.
The Sodastream Genesis Model is a nice looking sleek sodamaker that fits perfect on any kitchen counter, does not require any electric outlet, making it also a great take along for parties, outside or to the park to create your very own Soda right then and there.
Each syrup bottle will make approx. 33 12-oz cans of soda or 12 1Liter bottles or 6 2Liters; you do the math; each Sodastream syrup retails for about $6.99 (you can also find them on sale at your favorite retailer, so keep an eye out for that) and that would be about $0.21 per can of Soda and about $1.16 for each 2liter soda.
Making this a very affordable alternative to store bought soda and think no more recycling bottles and no more lugging heavy bottles around. The Co2 bottles can easily be exchanged at an exchange location like Kohl’s, Walmart and Bed Bath and Beyond for a full Co2 bottle and each Co2 bottle lasts about 120 liters (60 2Liter bottles)
