This is one of our families all time favorite dish; I hardly ever make it because I just couldn’t come up with the exact recipe that would taste like home. My mom usually sends me the Gravy packs from Knorr, since they are unavailable in the US L, but my kids bugged me the last few weeks to make Goulash. So I experimented with a few ingredients that I remember would go into the goulash and thought “well, either it’s a go” or ” we will eat something else tonight”….lol; Turns out it was a HIT and I loved it even more than the package gravy my mom used to send. The only bad thing, I didn’t cook enough, since I wasn’t sure if the kids would eat it… next time I have to double or even triple this recipe… The boys LOVED it.. and it turned out to be my favorite, too.
Was really simple …..This is what you will need:
- 1 pound Beef Cubes ( the traditional German Goulash has ½ lb. Beef cubes and ½ lb. pork cubes)
- 1 small 6 oz can of Tomato sauce
- 3 tables spoon of Tomato paste
- 3-4 cups of water/ beef stock ( I use Knorr Bouillon cubes to make 4 cups, can be purchased at your local grocery store, but are a German product)
- Mushrooms, cut in ¼ pieces
- 1 tablespoon Sweet paprika powder ( the more the better…J)
- 1 onion, diced
- You can also add Carrots and Potatoes to make it a entire Meal in one, I had no Carrots and was too lazy to peel the potatoes before work..lol
This is how to make it:
- Add all your liquids, Tomato sauce, Tomato Paste & paprika Powder to the Crockpot
- Add the meat & veggies
- Close lid and cook on high for 4-5 hours on low 6-8 hours
Serve over potatoes, rice or even pasta.

Interesting… I had no idea other countries called a dish goulash, it’s so different than American goulash. Looks good tho’- kind of like roast or shepherd’s pie.

I know it is soo different to the American, when hubby’s grandma way back when told me to come over for dinner we are having “goulash” I was all excited… I had no idea that american’s have a totally different goulash.. I was disappointed… BUT the “american” goulash is still wonderful and I love it, I just don’t call it goulash…hahahah ….

This looks really good, too. Just so you know… I hate peeling potatoes and I usually leave the skin on when I’m doing crockpot stuff. Just keep telling yourself that the nutrition is in the skin and then you don’t have to feel guilty – LOL

That sounds yummy! So different from the goulash made around here. And even between different parts of the US, the idea of goulash is different. I’ve seen it made so many different ways it’s hard to discern which recipe really IS goulash! haha!

When I was a child my neighbor used to make Goulash for her family and always made extra for my family. I loved it and I will certainly try out your recipe as it sounds very much like my neighbor’s. She always put in potatoes and carrots..lol.
Thanks so much for this recipe!

I am trying this recipe right now, except losing the tomato paste and sauce and using Korrs Goulash packet, which my German coworker suggested. It has all the seasoning in it, along with some dried tomatos and onions (though I still added a whole onion and some carrots) I hope it works out well! 🙂

it will turn out amazing.. I love Knorr… the only reason I don’t use it in the US, because the german one, the actual one from Germany, is that much different than the US Knorr Goulash… and I know the difference… BUT since you don’t, it will turn out perfect… would love to hear back how you liked it… We love it….

I always thought you had to cook the meat before putting it in a crockpot. You just made my day!

My grandmother used to make this all the time and I loved it! Though we called it Hungarian Goulash as that’s where the recipe was handed down from my great-grandmother. 🙂 I will so have to make this soon, it’s a terrific comfort food!
