Back when the kids got ready for back to school I decided to be a little proactive and create fun “Get Well” boxes so once the cold and flu season rolled around we could just spend all our time getting well instead of running around looking for all the things we need to get well.
When my oldest headed off to College for the fall I took a plastic shoe box and filled it with lots of things that I think would come in handy once he is out of the house and too far away from me to get to him within a few hours. You know that call…. That “MOM, I’m sick… HELP!” call. Unfortunately we are a few hours away from my college kid, to get him off to a better start and on the well track quickly I thought these boxes would be a good thing.
I picked up all of my items at Walmart and I included the following items in my box:
-
Chicken Noodle Soup, who wants to cook when you aren’t feeling well and I was always told that soup would work wonders.
-
Tissues, lots of tissues
-
Water and clear soda. That’s a given but again, Teenagers who will have that sitting around when the cold or flu season knocks at your door?
-
Robitussin® DM Max Strength, and Robitussin® DM Max Nighttime to treat the symptoms right away (use as directed), if you have little kids you could also add Children’s Robitussin® to your box.
-
Applesauce & Crackers. Comfort food and something that will last for some time inside the box.
-
My DIY Cold Bath Salt, to make your achy and sore muscles relax and feel better, the essential oils will also help you breath easier.
There you have a few of the ideas that I include in my “Get Well” boxes each and every year when the kids head back to school. The college kids take them to their dorm rooms and for the little ones I keep them neat in my pantry, tucked away till they are needed.
Trust me, these “Get Well” boxes will come in handy and have been a God send the last few years. Especially since everything you need to get-well is included. I don’t know about you, but when I get a cold and don’t feel well, the last thing I want to do is run to the store to get food and medication. So, get it all done while you are well and be prepared when you are down.
This year I send all the kids off to Back to School shopping and not only did I send them with a list for their back to school supplies, I also had a list of the things they need incase they get sick. It was a one stop shop and now we don’t have to worry about it anymore. Everything inside our boxes will last for some time. Think of it like sickness preparedness, just like you prepare for Hurricane Season. Be prepared and its half the battle.
Check out how easy it was to make the DIY Bath salt. Growing up in Germany my mom always put us in the bath tub at the first sign of a sniffle. She always added bath salts or some kind of essential oils and to this day I loved the steamy bathroom and the smell of the essential oils. Now that I’m grown, I do the same for my kids. However, I make my own Bath Salt and we love it. The kids can even put it in a hot shower if they don’t have a bathtub nearby.
Fill up your bathtub with hot water the next time you feel a cold coming on, add a cup (or two) of my Bath salt and relax. Breath in…. Breath out …. Ahhhhh… Can you feel it?
Now you know how easy it is to be prepared for Cold & Flu season and how to tackle it once you do get the cough and the cold. Thanks to Robitussin® you can clear cough from your schedule (use as directed) because “It’s never just a cough™” (use as directed). Now you can say “Your cough doesn’t stand a chance” (use as directed), and move on with your day.
Another great tip, print a few of my Printables so you can include them in your “Get Well” boxes. We also keep them on the fridge for when we are down with a cold and need to call the Doctor or Pharmacy. No one has time to look for numbers when all you want to do is sleep.
Hopefully you will have a quiet and uneventful Cold & Flu season but if you do catch the bug, rest assured Robitussin® and my DIY Bath Salt will get you back to your busy schedule in no time.
How do you tackle cold and flu season in your home? Do you prepare ahead or are you one that scrambles once you get sick? Would love to hear your tips, leave me a comment below.

I like your cold relief bath salts and need to make this for the cold and flu season. I need to get some of that cough medicine and plenty of homemade chicken noodle soup!
Mary Beth Elderton says
This would be a great gift. Not just for colds, but for allergies as well.

Doesn’t the green food coloring get on your skin and tub?
Melanie Roberts says
not at all, that’s the fun part. I’ve done this for years for the kids in different colors and never had an issue
Sue says
How do you use in shower?
Melanie Roberts says
I just put it on the floor in the corner you won’t get the benefit of the joint relief but it will let you breath easier.
Natalie says
You can also hang it in a sachet bag on the shower head.
Melanie Roberts says
True, I do that sometimes, thanks for the reminder.
Sheila says
15-20 drops of each oil or combined? Want to try this. Sounds so comforting.
Melanie Roberts says
You can do either way you like, I usually use per oil to get a strong “smell” since you are using it in a tub of water. It is so soothing, give it a try.
Donna Russell says
Is that 15 to 20 drops of each of the three oils or all together?
Melanie Roberts says
I usually always use that much per each oil, but you can adjust it to your liking, just remember when you are sick and can’t treat you need a good amount for it to work…
Helene S. says
Looks like a great recipe! Question about the essential oils: you list three of them, 1) is it any combination of those or all three? 2) 15-20 drops TOTAL (so, if I were using three different oils it would be 5-7 drops of each) or 15-20 drops of each flavor? Thanks!
Melanie Roberts says
I usually really use that many drops of all three in a batch cause I want it to smell strong in the bath, trust me the drops run fast so it’s not hard to get a good amount but you can totally adjust it to your liking and I use all three together but again you can adjust the way you like
Krystal says
Do you use all 3 oils in one batch or just 1 choice? Thought of making some for Christmas gifts.!
Melanie Roberts says
I usually use all three but if they are for gifts you could use only one, for a cold remedy I do use all three cause they all have different uses to get you well
Shannon says
Is it 15-20 drops of each essential oil?
Melanie Roberts says
I usually put that much, but you can put less if you like or more… It makes almost 2 big mason jars full
carol clark says
this is a awesome diy and i think id use this even if i didnt have a cold
Melissa says
Thanks for the recipe, I will leave out the green food coloring though. Where did you find the coarse sea salt?
Melanie Roberts says
You find it at every store in the regular salt section, enjoy… I love mine
Dana Rodriguez says
This is a great idea. I need to make some real soon!
Nancy Loring says
I always wanted to be crafty. I have a million ideas that I can never get out but this I can do. Wouldn’t I surprise my family with some of these in their favorite colors.
Rebecca says
Just woundering what essential oil can be substituted for the lavender essential oil?
Melanie Roberts says
You could leave it out or only use one of the three, totally how you feel like. I like Lavender to sooth the tired muscles but totally not needed.
Christina A. says
I love this idea! Sounds so wonderful for cold months!!
