Growing up in Germany, we’ve always had those Sleep bags where you put the infant and even toddler in to keep them nice and warm while they are sleeping. I remember when my Toddler was born in the 90’s he had a green colored with red teddy bears… amazing that you keep a memory like that. I’ve always loved these Sleeping bags, we call them “Schlafsack”. You put the child in zip it up and off to bed they go…. Little did we know that besides keeping the little ones nice and warm it would have also a wonderful benefit from keeping the little ones safe and reducing the risk of SIDS. No one ever thought about SIDS when I grew up, maybe because all the little ones were in those Sleeping bags already??
When I had my second child in the late 90’s I was already in the US and couldn’t really find anything that would compare to my sleeping bag that I loved from home, so I had my mom ship me some… I again used them till my infant son outgrew them. You must know, back in Germany they come even in toddler sizes.. I loved that, while he was still in his crib he could wear his sleeping bag….
Now fast forward a few years and the US finally has a similar product; I’m very excited that this very useful product is finally getting the word out and new Mom’s and Dad’s all across the US are hearing about it. I’m talking about the HALO SleepSack ( just like we call it in German “schlafsack”) actually has a very sad story behind it, but now will be able to safe so many more children.
To my surprise the HALO was founded in 1994 by William Schmid, a father who lost his daughter to SIDS. Unfortunately something like this had to happen for someone to realize there is a glitch on the market. L
Did you know that HALO SleepSack wearable blankets are the #1 choice of hospitals in the U.S. and that HALO SleepSack wearable blankets are used in more than 400 hospitals nationwide.
I like that a percentage of HALO Innovations’ profits are donated to leading SIDS and child safety organizations to fund ongoing SIDS research, education and family support. What a wonderful cause, I’m very proud to be able to introduce all of you to this wonderful company.
What is a Halo SleepSack?
HALO SleepSack wearable blankets are the #1 choice of parents and experts because of their safety features:
- Sleeveless design helps reduce the risk of overheating and re-breathing.
- Inverted Zipper for easy diaper change.
- “Hip Healthy” Sack Design Roomy sack design that is approved as “Hip Healthy” by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute allows baby to move and kick, promoting healthy hip development.
- Back is Best Emblem Embroidered design reminds caregivers to put the baby to sleep on his/her back.
By following these simple steps, parents and caregivers can help their baby survive and thrive:
Place your baby to sleep on his or her back at naptime and night time.
Use a safety approved crib with a firm mattress and tight-fitting sheet.
Remove all soft bedding and toys from your baby’s sleep area (this includes loose blankets, bumpers and positioners).
Use a SleepSack® wearable blanket to replace loose blankets in your baby’s crib.
DO NOT put your baby to sleep on any soft surface (sofas, chairs, water beds, quilts, sheep skins, etc.).
Room sharing is safer than bed sharing.
DO NOT dress your baby too warmly for sleep; keep room temperature between 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit.
DO NOT let anyone smoke around your baby or be in a room where someone has recently smoked
Educate relatives, babysitters and other caregivers about these important safety tips.
You can purchase Halo SleepSack on Amazon.com, Target or any retailer that sells baby accessories nationwide.

I saw these on TV or something similar. My son and wife are having their first child this spring. Really would like for them to have one of these. I have heard other that have one that it was the best thing they could have with a newborn.

For Amy, I had to have lots of blankets – she did not want to give up the womb feeling – and was so peaceful when swaddled – this would have been a true gift 🙂
