With Breast Caner Awareness month upon us, you will hear a lot of talk about donating your money.. I’m all for helping, but also want to make sure my money goes where I intend it to go to. I found an interesting article and thought I’d share it with you guys.
A few pointers from the article, that are interesting and I always tell my friends just about any donation.. not just for Breast Cancer.
Ignore grand-sounding names: During Goldman’s research into breast cancer scams, she found dozens of organizations whose names sounded a lot more impressive than they really are. Companies hire consultants to come up with names that sound like they’re national organizations when they’re really nothing of the sort. Words like "of America," "Foundation" and "charities" don’t mean a thing unless their books back it up.
Don’t give to a telemarketer: Hiring people to call you at home for donations costs big bucks – money that could be going toward cancer research and patient care. "Simply ask if the person calling is a telemarketer and tell them you don’t give donations over the phone," advised Goldman. If you want to research the charity on your own time, that’s up to you.
