As most of my readers know, we are a bilingual household in German and English. I can not stress enough how important and actually how easy it is to teacher your little ones a different language from birth up.
We are fortuned in this Crazy Mom’s household that I’m German and speak fluent German; so our kids naturally learn both English and German. But even if you are not fluent at a second language, kids will still benefit from this exposure greatly.
In this Crazy Mom’s household even hubby, who had no German experience now learns German along with the kids on an every day basis, since we are including it in our daily lives. So let me tell you about a wonderful company that is trying to help American families to learn a different language.
This company is called Bilingual Me and currently their language of choice is Mandarin; which is a total different ball game and so unusual. We all know that Mandarin ( a form of Chinese Language) has different writing all together, but with more and more companies looking to branch out into China and bringing China into the US it’s just a matter of time when we see Chinese as another language added to all the schools and offices.
Bilingual Me has a set of books that are 20 pages each, fairly handy in size for little hands and come in different themes like Vegetables & fruit, Nature, Animals, transportation, Food Occupation, Number and Colors as well as Families.
each book has 30+ words in both English and Mandarin as well as the pronunciation to go along with the word, each word also has a picture which makes it so much easier to understand.
Each book includes a rhyme or two, but to be honest, they are nothing like a Rhyme you would think of in the US; and I know this from the German language, it’s a cute rhyme in that language but once you translate it to English it makes sense but no Rhyme to it, that’s a little weird in these books. But then remember each culture is different, so keep that in mind when looking at the Rhymes.
The words are great, the pictures are actually cool. Each picture was taken around the world for example the Police Car is a German “Polizei” Car, or the Mail truck is a US Postal truck; some of the books have interesting items that we aren’t really used to like Rice balls and fried dough sticks? So in a way it’s weird, but cool at the same time, because you are being introduced to the culture along with the words and pronunciation.
Overall, I think this is a great concept and I wish more languages would be available, my Toddler and tween loved it and got a kick out of the different words and pictures. The books are geared for ages 3-8 but honestly I think any age, if learning Mandarin would benefit greatly from these books from age 3-99 for sure.
The company also has a Pen, that I haven’t used, but would defiantly ask you to check out. it’s similar to other “talking” pens, when you use it in combination with these books, it would make a great learning tool. The pen will talk to you and pronounce the words the way they should be pronounced. Making the Pen & Book series a great starter point for any family that likes to learn a new language but has no background or teacher to go to.
This is a great product and I wish they would have more languages to choose from. Other then that this would be great for Homeschool or any Mom or dad who would like to introduce their little ones to a second, third or even fourth language.
For more information, be sure to check out Bilingual Me on the Web, on Facebook or follow on @BilingualMe. You can also purchase the Bilingual Me products through Amazon.com; the pen can be purchased through Bilingual Me Shop.

Excellent review Melanie! I’m semi-fluent in Cantonese but I can’t read or write in Chinese. I’m glad you’re introducing your children to the Chinese culture at such an early age. Bilingual Me is a great tool to teach them to appreciate the large diversity of cultures this world has to offer. Thanks!
