Love More Feed Less.. Review & Giveaway

December 7, 2010 By Melanie Roberts

Being a mom of a Teen, tween and a toddler, I try to cook as healthy as I can, sometimes I know it’s just not possible or I simply ran out of ideas.

I was approached to review a book called Love More Feed Less A Tasty Path Toward Avoiding Childhood Obesity written by Randi Lee Levin;  although none of my kids are overweight or even need to watch their diet, this book was still a wonderful addition to our cookbooks. It has lots of ideas and information on feeding your little ones healthy meals.

Now you think, oh another book that tells me to give my kids salad each night and fresh fruits and veggies. Even though Salad, fruit and veggies are very healthy and a great choice for your kids, face it if they are anything like mine, it is a battle to feed them spinach or Broccoli. This book is totally different.

It takes every day food like French Fries and shows you a healthier way to prepare the food kids like, along with some tasty recipes like Banana Pops and these Snappers cookies that I will show you now.

You Need:

  • 1 cup canola, safflower or sunflower oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup plus 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • Additions: you can add raisins or nuts

How to make it:

  1. Mix together the oil and sugars, Add the egg and the molasses to the sugar mixture and mix thoroughly.
  2. Add the flour, baking soda, spices and any additions like raisins or nuts.
  3. Mix all ingredients together at slow speed until thoroughly incorporated. ( Do not over beat the dough). this batter will be moist.
  4. Grease 2-3 cookie sheets
  5. lightly flour your hands ( optional)
  6. take small amounts of dough and roll in your hand to little balls, size of your choice ( roll in optional sugar/ cinnamon mixture – see below).
  7. Bake 12-14 minutes @ 325F preheated.

Optional:

Cinnamon Sugar Mixture
1/4 sugar
1 1/2 – 2 tablespoons cinnamon
Mix together and roll the dough in the mixture just before baking 🙂

( we skipped that step cause my kids have to watch sugar intake per the Dentist 🙁 )

Ohh these cookies were soo yummy. My kids loved them and told everyone about the Snappers they made. We had to pack some for Mimi’s house to give to her and the kids just kept bragging about how good they were. I enjoyed them with a Hot cup of tea, too… delicious.. mhhhhh and the smell, just wonderful, and it’s still in the house now…..That’s the smell of Christmas 🙂

This is a wonderful cookbook for any home, from Appetizers to cookies everything you need to raise a healthy and happy child. This book can be purchased through Amazon or HERE or you can enter my Giveaway to win your very now copy of this brand new book!!!!

I have one child already that is on the heavier side and I have tried so many things. Maybe this would give me new insight on how to keep all my kids as healthy as they can be.

I would love to win this book!

I work in a special needs school. When kids with physical disabilities gain weight it just makes it that much harder for them to do things plus it makes it harder on the caregiver. But we love our kids and want to feed them. This sounds like a great book to recommend to parents and maybe pass on some recipes to the teachers.

Thanks so much! This is so timely as the school nurse and I was just talking about nutrition!
