If your Tween or even Pre-schooler is anything like my Tween, I have a product for you. My Tween has been asking me for a few weeks now if he could grow a garden. He has a big garden at his grandparents house, but we aren’t over there as much during school days, so his grandpa is taking care of the garden. I so would like for me Tween to start a garden at our house, but I just don’t know where to put it. The backyard with the two dogs wouldn’t really be a good choice, we talked about the front yard, but I have yet to get started. While doing some research for gardening I came across a wonderful company called “Growums”. Have you heard of them before?
Growums is accompany geared totally towards kids learning how to garden. They sell kids that contain everything you need to create like a salad,
pizza or Herb garden; this is too cool. They even have their own website, which is super cool. The company was founded by a Michael A. Ferraro , who wanted to show children that they can grow their own garden, too. He wanted to pass on the tradition that he had with his dad and teach every child where fresh vegetables actually come from. Believe it or not I’ve spoke to kids a few weeks back and a lot don’t even know where Carrots are from… isn’t that sad??
Growums Garden Kits give kids the tools they need to get started with specially-themed garden kits that combine learning and fun with a unique and exciting online educational experience to grow vegetables and herbs from seed to harvest; all with a little help from a colorful cast of animated herb and vegetable characters!
Growums are the only gardening kit for children known to offer the interactive platform. The characters enhance the entire gardening experience with a fun and entertaining approach that instills an appreciation for the environment and encourages the healthy eating habits so important in the struggle against childhood obesity. Kids can choose from six fun kits – Herb Garden, Pizza Garden, Salad Garden, Stir-fry Garden, Taco Garden and Ratatouille Garden – to grow a real garden with virtual world fun. Each garden kit features unique, magical coco or peat pellets that make planting and growing practically foolproof.
The fun and colorful team of Growums characters comes to life online in an animated step-by-step series of mini videos that are sent to children
and their parents every ten days to show and explain what to do next and how to care for their vegetables and herbs every step of the way – from planting the seeds to transplanting the sprouts, as well as tips on dealing with soils, watering and even bugs. With a little help and information from clever characters such as Tomicio the tomato, Frank Cilantro, Belle Peppa, Ice Berg the lettuce wrapper, Elvis Parsley and more, in a matter of weeks kids will be able to harvest fresh vegetables and herbs to create nutritious meals. This well thought-out program creates fun and helps to ensure children’s success growing their healthy vegetables and herbs.
I had my Tween check out Growums and he decided on the Salad kit. He loves salads, so why not grow his own and get his little garden started.
This is what was included in the kit.

Our kit included:
8 Coco Pellets
Carrot Seeds
Cucumber Seeds
Lettuce Seeds
Tomato Seeds
Plant Tags
As you can see, everything to have a wonderful salad is included. To get started is easy, too take a pie plate or some kind of shallow dish and add all your pallets, addd a cup of warm water and watch the magic grow. My Tween was amazed at how quickly the little pellets grew into those big pellets that would be ready to hold his seeds in less than 30 seconds. Was way cool

Our next step was to add 3-4 seeds to each pallet and mark them with the included Plant tags, add a little more water and sit them on a sunny window; being in Florida we have all our windows dark, but we took them outside into a partial sunny spot for a few hours and will move them in an out till they start growing big enough where we can transfer them into a pot and start our container garden.
After we finished our “gardening” we went to Growums.com to see what they had and the coolest thing; if you sign up ( which is free), they help you grow your garden, they will be with you every day, it’s almost like farm Town on Facebook J. We started on day one added our garden and it asked us questions like did you start your pellets, did you add seeds, did you water and so on, in the end it gave you points for each task. They ask for you to come back each day to mark your tasks; they will keep track of your growing stage. How cool is that. I was very impressed with their website, very colorful, and nicely done. Very easy to navigate. We looked around the “Class” and they have cool videos showing what your steps are. It was really cool. I’m not sure which I love more the garden kit or the website… both are super cool.

This would be a cool homeschool project or a class room project lesson on how to grow veggies, or just for your little one at home. My Tween is totally excited, because he can start his garden from scratch and be the one in control what he can grow, he is already waiting for it to be big enough where he can make a salad for the family, I can wait either.
What a wonderful idea and so simple, but the kids would love it. I will defiantly get more of the different kits and my Tween can start all the different gardens and we will keep them on the porch, so much easier….
For more information go check out Growums.com, Follow them on Facebook or @growums, each kit retails about $9.99 and can be purchased HERE, for more gardening answers check out learn2grow. Growums for Kids from Growums on Vimeo.

I’d like to try the Taco or Pizza one for my daughter. She loves both and she is definitely starting the I want to grow something stage. They’ve been learning about plants and how they grow. She brought a tree home on earth day and we planted it. I think she’d be amazed by this!!
