GIANTmicrobes….. Have you hear that name before? I have to be honest, until a few weeks ago I haven’t heard that name and it took me a while to even understand what they mean or who they are. You have to know, everything I hear, say or read, I translate back to my native language German, I know it’s weird, but that’s how my brain works, I speak perfect English  (so I’m told) but everything I say or do I translate back and forth in a matter of second. Now with the GIANTmicrobes, I had some trouble translating trying to figure out what they are, are they toys, something to eat, shoes…?? I had no clue and a dictionary sure was no help with GIANTmicrobes… so, this is what I found out about the GIANTmicrobes.

GIANTmicrobes was founded in 2002, by Drew Oliver, a father of 2 and the mission  at Giantmicrobes Inc. is to produce unique and interesting gifts for children and adults alike. Whether your interest is educational, medical, or just plain old entertainment, they are  your number one source for all things microbial.

Now with the Flu and Cold season upon us, I took a closer look at those GIANTmicrobes. They recently launched a new Vinyl Figure line, which includes Giantmicrobes sniffles, GIANTmicrobes Dr. Larkin, GIANTmicrobes Ahhh-lbert, GIANTmicrobes Bellie and GIANTmicrobes Nibble; you guessed it, all those funny figures are representing well known viruses and Illnesses. For example Mr. Sniffle is also known as Rhinovirus or Mr. Dr. Larkin is also known as Orthomyxovirus.

The cool thing about the new Vinyl Figures is that you can teach kids in a fun and playful environment to wash their hands before they eat, after play and after using the bathroom. We were given two of the cute “viruses” and my daughter had a ball playing with them in the bathtub, washing and scrubbing and the entire time we made up songs about washing our hands.. it was so much fun, we now have one figure in each bathroom by the sink and it reminds the entire family to wash their hands more often.

These “cute” figures are so ugly that they are cute… these will teach kids in a fun way to wash hands and to reduce the risk of getting sick. I also think, if you know someone in med school, they would get  a kick out of the entire vinyl figure collection and I bet everyone would be asking questions about Mr. Larkin or Mr. Sniffles and Co, they would be the talk of the town in any dorm room.

They are such a simple product, but have a powerful message behind them. We truly enjoyed having Dr. Larkin and Mr. Bellie in our home to help us keep the “real” Dr. Larkin and Mr. Bellie and Co. far away from us….

  11. I would like to win Rhinovirus. Blue is my favorite color and it seems like my class this year can not stop using tissues. I could go broke buying all the tissues. Perhaps if I bring Rhinovirus into the room, the sniffles will go away.
