Review of the book “Glue His Butt to the Chair”

December 27, 2011 By Melanie Roberts 4 Comments

GLUE

“Moms and dads can buy butt glue for kids?!”  That was the 1st words out of my 6 year old son’s mouth when he saw the book.  It made me laugh but then I thought to myself that it really would be nice to be able to do that hehe.  I mean, I have had it up to HERE with the homework struggle!  I’m tired of telling my children to sit back down and do their schoolwork.  I myself have always hated homework and we didn’t even have that much back when I was in school.  Why does homework have to be such a big pain?

My 7 year old daughter is in second grade this year.  She brings home what should be about 30 minutes of homework every night.  Since the beginning of the school year, almost every day we were spending one to two hours on it.  This was time that I simply did not have.  I was getting frustrated about it and so was she.  She was getting up every five or ten minutes from her desk to go and play around with something in her room or talk to her brother.  I had a hard time helping with her math assignments because I am really terrible at doing anything more than simple addition, subtraction or multiplication problems.

After reading this book and using what I learned from it.  My daughter now sits at her desk for 30 minutes and does not move!  If she completes her homework before her time is up then she has a coloring book to use or she may read a good book.  If she happens to “forget” that she should be doing her homework all I have to say is”what’s the rule?”.  Homework is no longer stressful and I am one happy parent!

Glue His Butt to the Chair takes the drama and fighting out of homework so your child can get it done! It’s not magic, it just makes sense! First, our books are about getting you OUT of the teaching business, and allowing your child to have a life that is not dominated by homework.

Butt in the Chair!:

  • The process of “doing homework” can quickly get very complicated. Sometimes, the simplest solution is the best one.
  • The first (most basic) step in this particular process is planting your kid’s butt in the chair, and keeping it there for the specified amount of time—hence, our title.

But how do you get the butt in the chair. . . and keep it there?

We’ve got secret, and we are ready to share!

Want to know it?  It’s called “What’s the Rule?”

“What’s the Rule?” is a very simple system. It limits the amount of time your child will spend doing homework, and gives you guidelines for how to maximize your child’s chances of doing well academically.

  • We do not encourage you to “coach” your child.
  • There is no expectation that you will review his homework, monitor his compliance, or be his teacher.

What’s the Rule?
“What’s the Rule?” is a system that removes the need for commands, reminding, and enforcement.  Part of its simplicity is that there is absolutely no negotiating—and the relationship becomes about the task rather than about YOU!  This prevents arguments between parents and children, making homework time quicker and less stressful, giving you and your family your evenings back.
