In search of the lowest price rate plan for a new cell phone and maybe even unlimited? Well, come along and see what we found.
Everyone you know has a Smartphone and everyone probably spends an arm and a leg just to be mobile and to have the coolest and best electronic out there. Being a Mom of two teenagers that keep bugging me for a smart phone, I know too well how expensive it can be.
We had a contract phone with a family plan for oh, about 6 years now. Slowly over the years we added the kids to our plan, but we never changed to data. Just the shared minutes and Text messages cost us a fortune. We didn’t even have expensive phones; we used the little ol’ phones that came with the plan.
My kids know that I’m cheap and spending money on a cell phone just so they can check their Facebook App or chat with their friends wasn’t in the budget. Our current contract will be up in about 6 weeks and I was on the hunt to find something cheaper, something more reliable and something that would make the entire family happy.
Currently we spend $190.00 a month, YES… $190.00 a month on cell phone charges that only include 750 shared minutes and unlimited Text for 3 cell phones, no data/Web or even Wifi ready phones. Ridicules!!
We are planning to take another trip home to Germany next year and really want to save as much money as we can, so cell phone is the first thing to go. We have a house phone, internet and many Wi-Fi devices, so the $190.00 really is not going to be extended for 2 more years with a new contract.
In my hunt for a new cell phone company as well as plan I looked online and couldn’t really find anything. I figured I had a few weeks left before our so oh amazing contract would run out, I wasn’t in a hurry. But when I went shopping at Walmart the other day, something caught my eye.
There was a display for a NO CONTRACT phone; unlimited Text, unlimited Talk and unlimited Web for $40 a month per phone. You heard that right… ALL UNLIMITED!! Even DATA!! I quickly grabbed one of the very helpful employees in the electronic department and asked him what the scoop was about the plan.
I was told that the only scoop is that this is a limited offer for the $40 a month, but if I would lock it in, meaning getting our phones now and activating the first phone for $40 a month and any additional line would be $35 a month. My monthly charge of $40 a month will include unlimited text, talk and Web even after the promotion is up. After the promotion the monthly fee would be $45 a month for the first phone and $35 for any additional line up to a total of 5 lines.
I checked out some of the phones they had to offer; now you do have to pay for the phone, but in the long run it ends up a lot cheaper for your family without a contract and a $40 a month plan per phone. Some phones starting as low as $39.88.
To my surprise they had all the cool Smartphone’s that all the kids want to have and I have to admit, I would LOVE to have a Smartphone. I could download all those App’s people talk about, use the camera to take pictures of the kids, check the weather while on the go and so many more things a super busy mom could do with a cell phone.
I decided to grab one of the phones, the Galaxy SIII and to give the plan a test run. If we like it, I can always move the kids and hubby over to their very own Smartphone plan and if I do that that alone would be a $45/month saving, just by switching to a no-contract #FamilyMobileSaves phone. WOW! Plus we all would have Smartphones.
I got a Starter Kit to activate my phone and the wonderful employee in the Walmart Cell Phone section told me that I could activate it online in no time. A few simple steps and he was right, took no time at all and my service was up and running. Now… I’m a super cool Mom with a Smartphone!! I can check my e-mails, send text and call the family all for $40.00 a month!
I will test the phone and the service for the next month and will report back to you if we think the service is worth the switch or if we change our mind and will keep our relationship going with our current contract service provider.
Remember, the #FamilyMobileSaves is a no contract phone, through T-Mobile (btw, did you know T-Mobile is a German company… whoo… Loved them and always had great service with them… let’s hope the no contract phone will be just as amazing as the phones with contract) and exclusively available for $40 at a Walmart near you. The $40/month offer is limited, I was told till the end of May, so you may want to make the switch before the special deal is over.
For more information, be sure to visit Walmart.com or the T-Mobile online account management. You will actually be billed for the service, making it super convenient and you don’t ever have to worry about running out and getting those refill cards.
In my opinion so far, nothing really will change, I still get a bill, but every month for the same amount, no surprise we ran out of minutes, or we send too many Txt’s and have overage fees, nope all included in our plan and my monthly invoice will be the same no matter if my Teen decides to send 1000 I miss you texts to his girlfriend or my husband decides to send me 500 Hi messages… no worries and my budget will be in check every month!!
I’m super excited to take this 30 day challenge and report back to you, can you tell? Oh, I also created a Google Plus Story so you can follow my trip to Walmart and see what products I was able to find and what No Contract phone display I was talking about.
Are you ready to make the switch yet? Would love to hear your cell phone experience with your current provider and how maybe a no-contract phone would benefit your family as well.
P.s. just for the fun of it, in Germany they call cell phones “Handy”. Did you know that?

I’m seriously considering a new cell phone so will investigate this option.

Insert squeal of delight! I haven’t heard anyone call their cell a “handy” in far too long!!! I miss Germany! We were stationed there for 3 years when the husband was in the army.
What i also love about the Family mobile plan is you can buy “extra” packs so you can call Germany for a lot cheaper than other international calling plans on the contract mobile plans. Very cool.

Looking forward to your follow-up. That looks like the way to go for cell phone service. Our bill is about what yours is. It would be lovely to have a good alternative with much lower pricing. Hopefully all cell phone companies follow suit!

That sounds like a great deal! WE spend close to $200 for the three phones we have (supposedly all unlimited)…I may have to reconsider 😉

I am curious can you use your phone as a hotspot on this plan? How are you finding the coverage?

My old service had many dropped calls, none so far and they are all clear. I’m loving it so far. But will give you a detailed update in about a month when i used the phone longer

As a parent, I appreciate any plan that saves me money and that I don’t have to commit to long-term. This helps, especially once kids start having their own cell phones so they don’t rack up all kinds of charges.

I totally hear ya, another nice bonus, if the kids get in trouble, you can take the phone away and don’t have to pay for the month… 🙂 or just don’t renewal that month and they know they are in trouble…. I love this No_Contract plan already in soo many ways…

My daughter needs a new cell phone plan. I will have to share this with her.

Oh, so you’ve been through the 1000 “I miss you” text phase, too, huh? LOL With a teen or even pre-teen in the house, I think the only safe plan is an unlimited one but through the contracts, just too expensive! I love that you could save so much and still upgrade phones with this no-contract plan! Not only will you be hero Mom, but a win-win for everyone 🙂

I need a new phone too!! Love this great post, thanks for explaining everything so well. Enjoy!!

is it $40.00 total per month, does that include taxes or is that extra? Really want to know because if it includes taxes, I’m in!!!
Melanie Roberts says
From prior experience, looking at other providers that do a monthly pay it does not include Tax, BUT I haven’t gotten my first bill yet and will update you on that. I haven’t heard anything about the tax, but been thinking about it. Will certainly keep you posted and update in my 30 day review, so stay tuned.

This sounds like a much cheaper option! I have a question…if you decided to do this plan for a few months and then stopped, would you be able to use the phone as a normal one on another network, T-Mobile or AT&T for example?

As far as I know these phones are not locked and have SIM cards inside… Walmarts plan said buy a phone or bring your own… so i guess you could use it on other networks as long as that network provider will allow it. I looked into another plan from a different company and they will not allow you to bring your phone or use their phone anywhere else. So it’s really up to the company that you are switching to if they accept your phone I think.
