Sesame Street Video Game Review & Giveaway

December 13, 2010 By Melanie Roberts

Do you have a toddler in the house that is eager to play with your Wii System or an older siblings DS system? I know my toddler can’t wait to be able to play with the “BIG” kids stuff. I was excited when i heard that Sesame Street, a all time favorite in our house, has two brand new video games for Wii, PC and DS geared towards toddlers.

Finally a learning tool that my toddler can use on the “big” kids systems.  Let me introduce you to

Sesame Street: Elmo’s A-to-Zoo Adventure and Sesame Street: Cookie’s Counting Carnival

Sesame Street: Elmo’s A-to-Zoo Adventure and Sesame Street: Cookie’s Counting Carnival are unlike other educational entertainment for preschoolers, in how they combine console and handheld video games with Sesame Street’s curriculum and the characters that your family knows and loves. The games are entertaining and intuitive, enabling the youngest kids in the family to have fun while learning on their own pace.

In Sesame Street: Cookie’s Counting Carnival, kids can join Cookie Monster and Big Bird at a fun-filled carnival with game play steeped in math skills, including number identification, counting, shapes and pattern recognition.

In Sesame Street: Elmo’s A-to-Zoo Adventure Elmo and Zoe head to the zoo, where they explore exciting habitats and play games base on a variety of literacy skills. Players learn such skills as letter identification, letter sounds and word families in the Aquarium, Savanna, Jungle, wetlands and Arctic habitats.

My Toddler loves Elmo and  we were trilled when we were selected to review the two Sesame Street Wii Games. Now my Toddler  thinks she is a “Big” girl. She gets to play with her Big Brothers Wii System.

We starter her off with the Sesame Street: Elmo’s A-to-Zoo Adventure, it was a bit difficult for her to spell the words, after all she is only 2, she didn’t really care for the “correct” spelling rather just push the buttons and see Elmo talk. Which is fine, at her age she shouldn’t be a spelling bee, just yet, she played a  little bit with it and then moved on to the Sesame Street: Cookie’s Counting Carnival.

How did my Toddler like the games: The Cookie Monster game was great for her. She had a ball looking for shapes and numbers. She knows all her numbers and can recognize most of them, as well as most shapes, so she had a great time catching 7 ducks, or 4 pickles or putting 1 mouse in the triangle fairies wheel bucket… she spend a few hours over the last week playing this game and she loves it. This Cookie Monster game by far has been my Toddlers favorite.

What did Mom think? I think these games are a wonderful learning resource for your toddler and preschool age child or even Kindergartner. I rather have my little ones play games where they can learn something while having fun.

I love that each game has different learning levels that grow with your child and the interaction from the characters in each game is wonderful. For one instance, my toddler got side tracked in the Cookie Monster game and the Cookie Monster in a calm, encouraging voice, tried to get the attention of my toddler and encourage her to keep moving forward with her task, or when my toddler picked the wrong answer, the cookie monster encouraged in a friendly voice, to try again and think about the answer again. It wouldn’t reveal the answer right away, I liked that, it gives kids a chance to change their answer, rethink their game plan and have a second chance.

This game of course is a learning game and not a race to the finish line. Take your time and you will have lots of fun.

I also like that each game comes with a cute Elmo or Cookie Monster Remote Cover or DS pen. The Remote cover is a small sleeve that will go over the remote, it not only looks like Elmo or the Cookie Monster but it also hides buttons that the child won’t need. I thought that was a cute idea and they are thin enough they can be stored inside the game while not in use.

I also liked that the parent can turn on the Parent Assist Mode on a second remote and help the child through the task, parents can also customize up to 4 player profiles and set game limits, that will come in handy if you have more than one child playing in your home.

Another great feature is that all the game directions are spoken, Elmo or Cookie Monster will give directions verbally rather than in other games, as a text, that makes the little ones more independent with the game.

Also it is an active play, kids need to jump, tilt pump scoop, shake and toss to get the task done; All are performed with two hands with a ‘handlebar” grip. This gets the kids off the couch and moving. This would be  a great game to use on rainy days when kids can’t go outside, or a cold winter day…

As with every Educational game, this is a teaching tool not a miracle tool; your child will learn if used under adult supervision and help or explanation, I would not recommend you using this as a babysitter and think your child will get an education. It is an aid and a tool that if used correctly will benefit your child in letter and number recognition.

Sesame Street: Cookie’s Counting Carnival and Sesame Street: Elmo’s A-to-Zoo Adventure are both rated “EC” for Early Childhood. The Wii version for each game retails for $39.99 and the Nintendo DS and PC version of each game retails for $29.99 each.
