Simple kitchen #DIY adding more counter space and room

Simple kitchen #DIY adding more counter space and room

This is what my kitchen and dining room looked like last fall; I love to redecorate every so often and my hubby always rolls his eyes because he knows a new DIY project is in the works. I loved the way the dining room looked and the Ikea divider looked great and had lots of extra space and storage, but what bothered me was the way it made me feel claustrophobic in the room; my house isn’t very big and by closing off the view from the kitchen and dinning room made it seem even smaller. I loved the look, just didn’t feel comfy and something had to change.

The other day I set off to Lowes and found some unfinished kitchen cabinets, my measurements were perfect for 2 or 3 cabinets depending on the size I wanted the drawers or doors to be. I didn’t want to spend an arm or a leg and went with the cheapest option possible to get me much more storage room, drawer space (I only had one single drawer in the kitchen.. can you believe that??) and counter space.

Simple #DIY Kitchen Makeover

We spend about $300 on all the supplies, including the counter top that we will build from Wood planks. Paint was already at home from all the other kitchen and home remodels we did over the last few months. So this was a fairly affordable #DIY for us and be easily re-created by anyone as well.

Simple #DIY Kitchen Makeover 2

Assemble was simple, I just painted all the cabinets in the color of my choice, sage green and then used some walnut oak stain to distress the cabinets. Once it was all done, hubby screwed together the cabinets to create one cabinet in the kitchen. We added the wood planks and stained them with Minwax Polyshade, it’s a 1 step process and you get your stain and your sealer all in one. Been using it for years on the kitchen table and LOVE it!!!

In the end, this is what we ended up with. What do you think? Like the new Counter and Cabinet space? My son mentioned he wanted a chalk board and since the side of the cabinet was the perfect space, I used some chalkboard paint that I had around the house and a few coats later, we had a chalkboard in the kitchen. The entire project took us one Saturday from early in the morning, after our coffee and breakfast till about noon for painting, about 2 hrs to assemble it all (if at all.. may even been an hour) and then a few hours with a few coats of Polyshade in-between and that was it!

Here is the picture from the same side as the first one above.. what do you think…like.. dislike? I love the open space, miss my Ikea cubbies, but love the new cabinet as well. Till we meet again, for another #DIY project…

Love your new look! That is an impressive job to take on – doing your own cabinets? Wow, way to go! I am sure you love all the new space you created. My kitchen is small too and it drives me nuts not to have storage when I need it.
