Sunday Brunch – Make your own bagels..

November 14, 2010 By Melanie Roberts 1 Comment

We all love Bagels… But have you ever made your own at home?? it’s soo simple and so much cheaper than buying them at the Store…. yes it’s a bit time consuming BUT they do Freeze well ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here is what you need for the Base Bagel Dough, (you can add fruit, nuts, seeds anything once the dough is done):

1 1/4 cup of Milk

3 1/2 Tablespoons Butter

1 1/4 packs of dry yeast

1 Teaspoon Sugar

3 3/4 cups of Flour

1 1/4 teaspoon Salt

2 Eggs

2 Tablespoon sugar for the water

1 Eggwhite

How to make the Bagels:

1…..Heat the Milk in a microwavable bowl ( lukewarm) and melt butter( in a different cup)

2. In a mixing bowl add the yeast, sugar and the warm milk, mix and let rest for 3 minutes.

3.ย  Add the melted butter, flour, salt and eggs to the yeast mixture and mix with dough hooks till you have a yeast dough. (If the dough is too wet add a little more flour, if it is too dry add a little more milk).

4. Cover the Mixing Bowl and set in a “warm’ rest area for about 1 hr, till it doubles in size.

5. Once the Dough is doubled in size divide it into 12 pieces, shape each piece into a ball and take the back of a wooden spoon ( or something similar) and push a hole into the ball to form a doughnut.

6. Once all 12 look like doughnuts, let them rest on a cookie sheet covered with a kitchen towel and let rest for 10 more minutes.

Now pre-heat your oven to 325F ,

7. Put a pot of water and 2 tablespoons of sugarย  on the stove and bring to boil

8. Cover your cookie sheets with parchment paper

9. Once your water is boiling drop 3-4 bagels into the HOT water, they will sink, once back on top flip them and let them “swim” for 3 minutes; remove from the water and let “dry” on a oven rack or a kitchen towel, till all bagels went “swimming”.

10. Once all bagels took a swim, put them on the cookie sheet, brush with some egg white and put in the oven for 20-25 min.. ( keep an eye on them the first time, each oven temp varies).

Now enjoy HOT Home Made bagels… Yummy…

see that wasn’t that hard.. sounds worse than it is… ๐Ÿ™‚
