Well, we made it through the first week of school. All the kids were excited, because I kept the German school tradition alive and made each of them a Schultute (sugar cone). Usually you get one the first day of Kindergarten, but since I heard the boys complain that they NEVER, oh.. NEVER got one when they started Kindergarten and since I had no pictures to proof that they got one, I made each of the kids one. Boy did they love it.
Each Schultute was filled with candy for the boys and the Princess had lots of coloring, lunchbox containers, plush animals and little nick knacks inside to sweeten her Kindergarten days. What a fun tradition and I remember getting my Schultute when I started Kindergarten many many moons again in Germany.
In case you are looking to make a Schultute of your own, check out my tutorial and have lots of fun. Really is simple to do.
Okay now that we shared a German Back to School tradition it’s time to talk dinner ideas. What will you be dishing up this week? Oh, I loved Schultutes when I was a kid. My dad was stationed in Germany with the army for a few years and we had a class in school on the army base called Host Nation. We had a very nice teacher Frau Petzold who taught us the language and culture. At the beginning of each year, no matter how old you were, she gave each of her students a little Schultute with pencils, erasers and candy. Such a lovely tradition.

Visiting from Menu Plan Monday – your menu sounds delicious! Love the idea of the Schultutes, too – I’ve never heard of that before. How fun!

That is such a fun tradition, Melanie. I wish I had thought of doing that when my kids started school. They had to be content with lunch box notes.

Very cool tradition! Will have to ask my grandparents (who are from Germany) if they remember this tradition. Have a good week!
