Raising children in this day and age is tough all around, we have so many more influences than when we grew up; I’m an early 80’s child, when I was little, all we had was one tinny TV with 3 channels and it was black and white to boot; I grew up in Germany, so things were different than here in the US I’m sure; but you get the idea.
When I was in my teens we got our first VCR.. with a remote that was attached on a long cord.. how cool were we…. Now fast forward to the year 2011 our kids have 500+ TV channels, cell phones, handheld video games, PC, and the list goes on and on. So many choices and us, the parents, have to have so much more control over what we let our children do and not do, or what can be watched on TV and what is a no go.
My kids love to watch the Disney Channel, iCarley show, my Tween and Teen can’t get enough of the show; I approve of the show because my boys know that this is just a show and not reality and this is where parenting has to step in; you can’t tell your kids not to watch this and that, just because one character isn’t always doing the right thing, live isn’t always right.
The kids have to learn and understand, but in the end we as parents have to step up and make our children understand “This is just a show” not real life. Don’t let the TV be a babysitter or teacher and you walk away; so that being said, we love the Disney Chanel; they have some wonderful educational shows that my Toddler enjoys and has actually learned from, and we turn that learning into real life hands on teaching;
Nick Jr. is another wonderful resource for your toddler and tween; however the one thing that I do not approve of, and still bothers me, that Nickelodeon changes gears after I believe 10Pm and it turns into an Adult Swim channel; which is if you have ever seen it, totally inappropriate and I do not like that; I can’t even lock the channel, because it would lock daytime TV as well, and I would have to constantly run and unlock the channel during the day;
So after all my rand and rave, there is something new and someone wants to hear your voice about all the good and not so good things that are happening on TV, maybe what you like your kids to see and what you think is a no go. Charter Moms has a brand new Facebook page and they want to hear YOUR voice. Go check them out and make YOUR voice heard.
