It was a beautiful weekend in Central Florida and we love to use our outdoor grill as much as we can to keep the heat in the house down. In Germany, June and July is big grilling season (that’s what we call it..) and with every grill party there are plenty of salads and side dishes.
Last year on our trip home we enjoyed lots of these amazing salads and wanted to bring a little Germany to our table here n Florida this weekend and share with all of you, too.
We made Bavarian Pasta Salad with Homemade garlic breads. Garlic breads are always a stable on any German dinner table for a Grill party; it’s simple to make and so delicious. Much better then the one you buy in the freezer that’s for sure and only takes you minutes to make.
So, come along and travel through Germany with our dinner idea for today… it’s simple and I bet you and your family will enjoy it as much as we did… it’s different but delicious….
The Pasta Salad is a recipe my mom handed down to me; it’s a Bavarian Pasta Salad; now Germany just like the US has many different recipes for different areas, this is what I grew up with and is the only way I will eat green bell pepper, mayo and peas in one dish… I will not touch them any other way.. crazy, I know.. but if I make Pasta salad I will not make it any other way either…. I’m German, what can I say….lol
How to make Bavarian Pasta Salad
You need:
-
1/2 box pasta of your choice
-
small can of sweet peas
-
1/2 bell pepper
-
a few teaspoons of curry powder (to taste)
-
1-2 tablespoon of mayo or miracle whip
-
2-3 Franks
-
1-2 teaspoons of vinegar or apple cider vinegar
This is how to make it:
- Cook your pasta according to package directions
- in a bowl combine the peas, diced bell peppers and franks (I cut mine in half or rounds); add 1-2 teaspoons of vinegar and salt & pepper if you like; set aside till pasta is done
- Once your pasta is done, drain and rinse with cold water; add to your veggies and mix well
- Add curry powder and mayo; mix well
- Taste to see if more curry powder, mayo or Salt & pepper is needed and serve warm or chill in the fridge
How to make homemade garlic bread:
This homemade garlic bread cost me about $4 for a huge loaf that will feed my family of 5. I always buy the Kerrygold garlic butter, I will not use anything else and a lot of times I can get it on sale for $2.00 a stick. One stick is all you need and may not even need it all. Use your favorite fresh French bread; I love the French bread at Sam’s and that’s what I used this time.
Cut your bread in half, spread the garlic butter over each half. Warp in aluminum foil, make sure it’s tightly wrapped and now you can either put in the oven 375F for 5-10 minutes or put on the grill for about 5 minutes; the butter will melt and the bread will crisp up… Ahhh the smells that come out of this… delicious.. Voila.. your garlic bread is done… Enjoy
There you have it a German Bavarian pasta salad and garlic bread. Add some grilled pork chops, chicken or steak and you have dinner ala German’s ….. Enjoy….

I wish I could handle mayo, but I can’t so I won’t be able to try the pasta salad. But I’ll certainly go after your garlic bread!

I like that this is a simple enough recipe for me to put together and we’ve never tried Bavarian food so this would be a first for the family. Yum!
