Have you ever been told your coupon use was wrong? What do you do when you know you are in the right or believe you are at least? How do you defend your couponing integrity without coming across as a coupon nut? I am going to cover a few tips when it comes to this topic today! Hopefully we can all find a way to kindly disagree with our cashiers.

Make sure you are in the right. This means take a moment and listening to what the other person is saying. There may be a policy change or wording that you missed on the coupon that the cashier is trying to help you see. It is ok to be wrong and if you are polite about it you will both walk away from the situation without a confrontation.

Ask a question. Sometimes in order to avoid anyone being defensive it is best to ask the cashier a question instead of making an accusation. Something like, "this coupon says any not only items pictured. Am I misunderstanding the wording?" I know you understand the coupon but this gives the cashier a chance to remedy the problem without feeling personally attacked.

And if they still don’t listen? Sometimes showing them the coupon policy can remedy this problem. They have had a very long day as well and may simply be overlooking something. Give the cashier the benefit of the doubt. Kindness goes a long way.

What if they are rude about it? That is their choice. You do not need to join them. Stay calm, rational, and kind. The coupon in your hand is not worth hurting another person in order to prove a point.

What if your cashier simply won’t listen? If it is important to you ask for management. The managers know the policy and are able to work out disputes over coupon use. Just remember to use the above with management. Kindness is your best approach here. There is no reason to anger your store manager over a deal.
